What use was it to bring the writer and activist Chanel Miller to campus in the spring just for fraternity brothers to scroll, bored, on their phones as she movingly shared her experience as Emily Doe, the victim of Brock Turner? As I wrote at the time, I was floored and dismayed as I sat in the audience with one of my brilliant undergraduates; we heard Miller’s shattering account of being sexually assaulted by Turner behind a dumpster at Stanford University after a fraternity party. Her talk was riveting, and there was so much to learn from it. And yet many of the male students who hailed predominantly from fraternities — 15 percent of each chapter was required to be in attendance — were so tuned out that Miller commented ruefully: “You know, this has been my hardest gig, because they didn’t turn down the house lights. I’m not sure how you professors do it, because it’s so hard looking out at this sea of mildly disgruntled faces. I mean, I’m sure you’re all very moved, but …,” Miller smiled. The implication being, it didn’t seem like it, from her angle.

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

Isn’t sneaking up on you kind of Leigh’s forte? He consistently ignores contemporary trends, making unfussy masterpieces that knock you dead. There’s a steady confidence in one’s artistic voice that it seems eludes an eager showman like Iñárritu.

The raw visceral hatred some men have for women, at least women who step out of line, is shocking. I know it sounds like some sorta "one of the good ones" ploy but I am genuinely taken aback when I see it because I think: I had a fairly normal socialisation as a man in the west, how did I miss this?

Following Arnold’s new career as a self-help guru, it seems as if two moments determined his politics : 1) immigrating to the US when a Republican happened to be pres; 2) assisting at the Special Olympics with Sargent Shriver. Seems as if Trump made clear to him which of these was his priority.

Seems true of all professions now: people just want to work as opinionists about what the ostensibly do, and they want to be popular for it.

All AI generated content can do is waste your time. It is, in this sense, stealing your life, the precious finite time you have on this earth from you, every second you are forced to interact with it, forcing you to look at its meaninglessness. It is a mindless vampire.

The model here is De Gaulle: Vichy is not a French government; it was never a French government; its laws are null and void. Boom. Done. May one day we be so lucky to have a Democratic Party with a shred of his conviction.

Seems as though the more empirically verified a position becomes, the more American institutions develop a conflict avoidance around the issue. Vaccines, climate change, gun violence all cases in point.

Jokes aside, the nuclear bombing of Los Angeles is the single most terrifying scene in movie history, and it’s not even close. Despite that it was the highest grossing film of its year. Worth remembering when we debate Nolan’s decision not to depict the atomic bombing of Japan.

This article was an instant classic. The Jobs/Cook dichotomy is the kind of case study you see in Arendt’s Men in Dark Times or Judt’s Burden of Responsibility, in which idiosyncrasies of character end up playing the decisive role determining one’s moral position during a political crisis.
