You really gotta keep your mind sharp by reading all kinds of different things. I felt so smart about politics and theory when that's all I was reading; I felt like a history expert when in grad school and that's all I was reading; and now that I'm reading mostly fiction I feel like a great writer

Current WIP. This is fixin' to be the best book I've ever written, if I do say so myself
“Abby…”

“Yeah?”

I swallowed a painful lump. I wanted to ask a million questions, give her a million warnings, beg her a million times to never go back to Samantha. But she didn’t want me fretting over her. Didn’t want me talking about it.

So I said, “I, um. You look really good with the blue hair.”

“Mmm,” she said, but I heard the smile on her face. I breathed steadily, trying to calm myself. It was almost four in the morning. Sleep, I needed to sleep.

“Oaklynn?”

“Yeah?”

Abby waited so long to continue I thought she’d fallen asleep, or changed her mind. When she spoke her voice was quiet, almost mousy, like she was terrified.

“Downstairs…when you talked to, um, Tabitha…you called me ‘she.’”

“Y-yeah?” I said.

“I…” Abby said. “I use they-them pronouns now. I’m nonbinary.”

“Oh…” I said, my head spinning. “I…”

“It’s okay,” Abby said. “I know you’re not used to…I mean, it’s okay if you still–”

“No,” I said. “Abby…thank you for telling me.”

They nodded. “I missed you.”

“I missed you, too.”

Aliens is a great movie and I'm glad they didn't ruin it by continuing Ripley's story in any sequels.

My current WIP is horror-adjacent and has a lot of themes like homophobia, transphobia, racism, etc...I believe in the story, but it's so hard not to be affected by writing about this shit and also second-guess how I'm handling it all the time. Writing is hard lol

Love every single review I get that I can tell took the time to really absorb the book, no matter how much they liked it. People are reading Seed of the Black Oak and it's making them feel things and that's what being an artist is all about.

The world kinda sucks right now. Read a good old-fashioned fantasy where good triumphs over evil and love is the most powerful force in the world, and be inspired to keep fighting to make it better

* A sidelight from another angle of the anti-intellectual movement of capitalism in decline is afforded by the following extract from the technical journal, The Illustrated Carpenter and Builder:
"Nowadays admission to many factories depends on passing 'intelligence tests.'... These tests are not always designed to select the most intelligent of applicants; for in a certain Continental factory the management admit that they use intelligence tests to eliminate the alert and intelligent among the applicants, because the work is so sub divided and mechanised that its monotony has the effect of turning intelligent workers into Communists."

sucks that it has to be Playboy shining a light on this but I genuinely think it's an issue worthy of our collective consideration (just not for the reasons that demographic-obsessed fascists like JD Vance say)

Got this garbage in my inbox today. I didn't think it was possible to string together so many "It's not X, it's Y" sentences in a row
a slop marketing email clearly written by ChatGPT trying to get me to purchase services for my novel Seed of the Black Oak. I'm not gonna retype the whole thing but the subject line is "Seed of the Black Oak is asking what most epic fantasy won't: is the self you buried to survive still yours to give away?"

(This is not a major theme of my book btw) AI slop text from the body of the email. Literally a majority of the sentences in this email follow the "It's not X, it's Y" pattern, it's overwhelming. It's like a parody of a ChatGPT emailmore AI slop text. I like that the source of the main villain's magic, human sacrifice, is described as "a moral fact of the world, not a stat block." what? lol the ending of the AI slop email. The marketer wants 20 minutes of my time for "No pitch deck. Just a real conversation about the book." pass!

I wrote Seed of the Black Oak because I want stories that combine the old-school grit and action of classic sword-and-sorcery (Conan, Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser, Jirel of Joiry!) with modern sensibilities and a heavy dose of romance and passion. I think there's a lot of us out there! 🌈🚀💫

Joe Biden, who liberals like to claim was "the most left-wing/progressive president of our lifetime," got on national TV and lied about having personally seen "40 beheaded babies" to manufacture consent for a genocide, and I have never met a single liberal who is bothered by that

I wonder if like half of all Democratic Party politicians were "flaky" on whether or not busted white men with faces that look like Meltman from Action League Now deserve human rights, if W*ll St*ncil would still say it's foolish and short-sighted not to support them

Shamefully, I can't help but electoralism-post, so here goes: I think it's ghoulish, no exception, to be smug about people not wanting to vote for a person or party that keeps showing its infinite capacity to neglect others as some kind of "strategy."

Dane said nothing. The girl’s round cheeks turned beet red and she lowered the sword, and her eyes.
“Right, well, this is the funniest thing to happen ‘round these parts in a generation,” he said. “Look on the bright side! Maybe we’ll win a great victory from the Volmar laughin’ their arses off at the sight of a squire in a dress! Ha!” And he swept back out, evidently having come into the stables just to laugh at them.
Dane sighed. When the wooden door fell shut again, the girl spoke.
“My lord, if you wish, I will cut my hair,” she said. Her voice creaked. “I will cut it short, and wear trousers, and, and I will speak low, or not at all, and perhaps those knights who do not already know will assume I’m a boy–”
“It would be a sin to cut hair so fine, or to stifle a voice so sweet,” Dane said. Her next words caught in her throat, and she was still blushing.

How to Write Supporting Characters (ft. Seed of the Black Oak)
Ah, characters. We all love characters, right? I mean, you’ve got your protagonist. Every story needs a protagonist! Ideally they’re interesting, motivated, active, flawed in a way that…
