In this case the basic cut is just living vs non living systems

I don’t think people really get just how different organisms are from other physical systems. Extremely different!! Very different stuff happening! Cannot happen outside a living system! The reasons are chemical but the result is a very different kind of processing

Cognition being physical does not mean it can be done by a machine! The fact that one kind of physical system can do something does not mean a radically different one can. It’s like we forgot that physical systems are constrained by physical possibility

It's just accepted as normal that the UK hates trans people and that's ok. It doesn't even register as something to be concerned about when most cis people are talking about the state of the country. Tired.

I'm taken by this image of Bally Bagayoko, Mayor of Saint-Denis. A physically small man putting himself between protesters and cops, while someone behind him has his back.

chanterelles sold out! still plenty of lobsters tho. are you worried that maybe you don't know how to cook with lobster mushrooms? ask me anything! these are arguably more rare and fancier than chanterelles

no, she’s the wolf from a 4th or 5th century mosaic depicting the founding of Rome
The she-wolf who nurtured Romulus and Remus, depicted in mosaic form as a maniacal black dog with sharp teeth and white eyes.
My dog, bearing an uncanny resemblance to the maniacal mosaic wolf.

So a thing I didn't realise about disc brakes on cheap bikes which have become near ubiquitous in the last 10 years is if you ride your cheap disc bicycle down a big hill, like 10% gradient downwards for a few minutes solid at 30+mph, and your braking technique is bad, they'll overheat and fail.

This kind of settlement against the wishes of the indigenous population obviously doesn’t happen without significant armed force. Britain stopped being able to provide it in 1939 due to imminent world war 2, which people like to pretend means the mandate didn’t facilitate Zionist settlement.

They needed an imperial sponsor, who they envisioned providing the armed force (unlike typical chartered company arrangements). They successfully made an agreement with Britain during WWI, hence the British mandate for Palestine, which had the explicit purpose of facilitating Zionist settlement.

there was among other things a desire to prove that Jews were a “colonizing race”

This was supposed to be a kind of “prison-work before the crime.” “The Jewish Company” was supposed to be a chartered company. It didn’t have much in common with nineteenth century continental nationalism

They don’t abstract any of the relevant features of actual neurons though! they treat them as nodes. Individual cells are very computationally complex, a single neuron has the computational power of a multilayered neural network. but different

For a long time I've wanted a sense of how trump has or hasn't interacted with chatbots (we know he posts a lot of slop sure). And this TIME anecdote about Grok arguably leading Trump into war is just extremely bracing
Since returning to office, Trump has marveled at AI’s capabilities. He is increasingly in thrall to the tech executives courting him. In December 2025, Elon Musk returned to the Oval Office for a clandestine meeting. Trump spent hours asking Grok, Musk’s AI chatbot, questions about his presidency and legacy, according to an official present. At the time, Trump was ordering missile strikes against Venezuelan boats he alleged were smuggling drugs into the U.S. He asked Grok how Venezuelans would react if the U.S. captured Maduro. According to the official present, the chatbot responded that Maduro was a repressive and deeply unpopular dictator and that many Venezuelans would likely celebrate his downfall. After Trump ordered the mission to seize Maduro, the following month, celebrations broke out in the streets. Trump, according to officials, came away thinking Grok was ingenious.
