I talk a great deal about reading for pleasure; I’ve written elsewhere about the necessity of pleasure in the classroom, and why it is not an optional extra but the hallmark of true education. We must find ways to show children that reading gives you access to an inexhaustible source of delight. But I worry, too, that we are limiting the meaning of the word pleasure. Learning is a strange and discomfiting experience; it’s a struggle and a frustration, and epiphanies are rare. It is not always pleasure in its easiest sense.

The Luddites loved technology. They owned looms at home and would ‘mod’ them to count threads. Their battle was against worker exploitation. The degradation of their rights, safety and wages. They were against a handful of rich businessmen owning the means of production. Sound familiar?

"Writing Poems Inspired by Music and Song"
If ekphrasis is (usually) a textual response to a visual piece of art, how does that change when the piece of art is a song? Do we respond differently to Pulp than to Puccini? To Bonnie Prince Billy or Bonnie Tyler or Beethoven? We'll be looking at work by poets like Frank O Hara, Anthony Vahni Capildeo and Bob Cobbing, then create our own new poems in response to musical prompts. With poet Chrissy Williams. A 12 panel sequence of a rabbit in a hospital bed drawn loosely in a sketchbook with a black pen, the outdoors - a tree, grass and blue sky as seen out of the window - is drawn in color pen. In the sequence the rabbit’s head separates from its body like a helium balloon, floats upwards and then is seen bobbing through the air outside the window.
