In 2019, Harry Sanders wrote for The Sprawl about an old Calgary violin shop that got demolished that year. A lovely elegy capturing a forgotten bit of the city's past. Today I republished it in his honour. (Harry died on Sunday, at the age of 59.)

We need a portal to complain about car lanes. Not a single car using this one this morning and it is causing significant #yycbike congestion. #ableg #yyccc

This was my main concern when #yyccc announced it was shifting to electric. If you make public transit crappier and shift people back to cars, how is that an emissions win?

Incredible details from @rwarnica.bsky.social about the treatment he received in Calgary after daring to ask Ontario Doug Ford about his past comments on Alberta separatism at a press conference during Stampede. 🔗: www.thestar.com/opinion/star...
Afterward, in the Q&A, I asked what I thought was a fairly innocuous and obvious question. In October, thanks entirely to Smith, Albertans will be voting on their province’s future in this country. Ford had, quite rightly, denounced the referendum when it was announced in May, saying Smith was probably only doing it to appease her base.

I wanted to ask Ford about those comments and whether he had raised the issue with Smith in Calgary. But before I could finish my question, I was interrupted by a collective hiss from the meat-wall of political staffers and guests seated to my right.

“This is a pipeline announcement!” one angry voice howled.

“The Red Star!” another raged. At the press conference in Calgary, some of the Alberta politicians in the room seemed genuinely upset that I’d asked Ford about his own public comments about Smith and independence at a press conference with Smith three months from a referendum on independence. One of them even loomed over me as I walked out and warned me to make sure I included Ford’s full remarks about Justin Trudeau’s government treating Alberta “like garbage” in my story.

(When I asked who he was he replied: “don’t worry about it,” like an enforcer for the world’s saddest mob. It was Joseph Schow, the Alberta minister of jobs, economy, trade and immigration.)

Incidents may be higher in suburban stations, but where do you think most of the offenders boarded (for free)? Preventing enforcement on the busiest stretch where both lines could be patroled is a root cause of our transit safety issues. #yyccc livewirecalgary.com/2026/06/03/c...

It is, but that is my point. If I don't water today, it will only get 2 this week. If I could wait and see if it rains again, I might not need to water at all. As it is, I will run the sprinklers today in case.

This is what I really dislike about the City's new watering schedule. After yesterday's rain, I don't need to water today, but if I don't, I have to wait until Wednesday. So I will probably override the rains sensor and water tonight. Normally I would wait and see if we get more precip. #yyccc

I'm jealous of Vancouver's system for sure. Blows away Calgary for frequency coverage. I think a lot about fare systems and not sure what the right answer is. I wish we had a maximum daily fare - once you hit, say $10. Would take the guess work out of buying a day pass. (maybe even a monthly max?)

Similar in that you have to ride more than 3 times in Vancouver to make the day pass pay. Connect card saves you a fair bit, but you have to pay a deposit, and reloading it can be a pain. Credit card option is good for emergencies but will cost you a lot more in the long run.

Chris Doyle @chrisdoyle78.bsky.social · 08/05/2026
Yes, but you pay 50%(!) more if you tap a credit card instead of using a prepaid transit card.

Chris Doyle @chrisdoyle78.bsky.social · 08/05/2026
I agree turnstiles are costly and a nuisance. Letting transit officers spot check alternating blue and red line trains in the core will hopefully mean we never have to go there.

Yes, although suburban platforms have no turnstiles and you can still get a fine for being on one without a ticket.

A couple years ago I would have lined up to defend the free fare zone. But the way things have gotten downtown lately, and the number of people I know who will no longer take it over safety concerns has changed my mind.

Chris Doyle @chrisdoyle78.bsky.social · 08/05/2026
While smarter pricing on transit *might* make sense, leading with "surge pricing" is a sure way to make sure any reform gets killed out of the gate. #yyccc
010
Chris Doyle @chrisdoyle78.bsky.social · 08/05/2026
Yes, but downtown where the lines converge is the easiest place to enforce. Right now you can't do that. And yes, they can enforce fare payment on platforms.
100
Chris Doyle @chrisdoyle78.bsky.social · 08/05/2026
We need to do more to help vulnerable populations downtown. Letting the c-train turn into a rolling homeless shelter/safe injection site is not the answer. #yyccc

Chris Doyle @chrisdoyle78.bsky.social · 08/05/2026
It's also surprising how many people have admitted to me they don't bother paying for their commute from Erlton or Sunnyside (maybe that explains the push to save the zone). #yyccc

Chris Doyle @chrisdoyle78.bsky.social · 08/05/2026
Surprised by the late fight against getting rid of the free fair zone. If you ride the train at all, it's obvious that being able to run fare enforcement on 7th Ave would immediately help with safety issues. #yyccc
