No, I don't know him! And also admittedly don't know a lot of later Scriabin well enough to be trashing it.

In grad school this performance of Prometheus was HOTLY anticipated and was, in fact, quite a fun spectacle ... but the concert paired it with Ein Heldenleben and, as a piece of music, Prometheus could not help but suffer when juxtaposed against an actually competently-written large-scale tone poem

this feels like a comment I would want to get mad about b/c I love Scriabin but I guess I admit that I mostly love him up until about the Fourth Sonata and then once the sparks really start shooting out of his head his pieces sound kinda samey to me

I'm normally not a big Britten guy but looking forward to finding out if I feel differently in an opera situation

I will, it's next up in my lineup of 20th-century operas I need to belatedly get to know (currently up is Peter Grimes)

It's just much, much more fun than music like this normally is (and I like it when it's not fun, too, but this is very enjoyable)

LRT not only is this piece nuts in the aggregate, it is nuts in every particular. What kind of music is this? Trick question, it's like 12 kinds of music in one piece

It's just gratuitous—I love reading and translating German but Fraktur adds a whole additional layer of annoyance

Chris Brody @chrisbrody.bsky.social · 6h
Before year 1 of my PhD, I decided to sit for the German translation exam even though I hadn't really reviewed my German—could always try again next year. I translated the first passage, turned the page, and then walked straight out of the exam room upon seeing that the second passage was in Fraktur

Is writing a tuneless melody that ends on scale-degree 4 with partial correspondence between the lyrics and the letter names of the pitches a good way to develop some kind of music notation literacy?

As I've said many times now, the one good thing that can come out of the awful times we live in (baseball department) is that baseball fans far beyond Northern California come to realize and accept, however belatedly, the loathsomeness of the Dodgers.

Chris Brody @chrisbrody.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
At this point I'm not sure I can condone rooting for the Dodgers even if you have been a Dodger fan since birth. You would need to have a multigenerational Dodger fan family pedigree going back to the 19th century. And even *then* I'm judging you a little bit.

Academic friends: I am looking for texts (from any field or discipline) that address play/playfulness as either an analytical tool or a form of feminist praxis. I know this comes up in Haraway’s work but I’m wondering what else is out there. Thank you in advance for any guidance!

Tfw you are settling in for your jail vacation (which you somehow perfectly lined up to start on the first day of your sabbatical) and you realize that the mandatory sentence specifically does not include any paper for the typewriter

You really have to understand this as an attempt to freeze the field at where it was in a handful of departments in the 1970s

Before Danuta's talk, I thought I understood the difference between schema and topic for 18th-century music. Like, of course? What do they even have to do with each other? Well, this showed me how naive I had been.

If that's in order to smuggle in dissertations that are like exclusively mathematical music w/ theorems and proofs, then it very much supports my view that it's just any topic where Allen Forte would have permitted you to get a job
