Mentioned seeking out women composers bc I nvr played any as a student. Someone had to reply "composers I play the most Joplin & Chaminade. I didn't seek out either for being in unrepresented group; I just like their music." Good for you, but if no one seeks them out then we won't know they exist!

Host Sandra shared this lovely feedback with me
Just listened to Ep. 2... WOW!
So so good.
Love all the historical details.
Honestly didn't know who
Fanny Hensel was at all before this
Really appreciate the
depth of knowledge that Molly has, and her fair assessment of the dynamics within the Mendelssohn family.
Fascinating.
And my gosh... the synchronicity of her deciding to work on Das Jahr in 2020!!
Incredible.
And... "Fanny's melodic writing perhaps even better than Schubert." Whoah!!
Excellent work my friend

Anna Beer
Henselfest 2027
April 1-3, Berkeley, California
henselfest.orgAnna Beer
Anna Beer, the author of biographies of some very familiar figures (think Milton, Raleigh and Shakespeare), is best-known for her feisty, feminist accounts of less-well-known female creatives, including her most influential book, Sounds and Sweet Airs: The Forgotten Women of Classical Music (2016). In Sounds, Anna explored the life and work of eight superb composers, including Fanny Hensel. Sounds has led to creative collaborations across the musical world, on radio and TV, on film and the concert platform, and now the first Henselfest.
Ten years on from Sounds, Anna is again exploring the position of women in the music industry, combining her trademark historical analysis with interviews with contemporary practitioners. Composer: the changing face of music will be published in 2027.
Anna lives and works in Oxtord, where she's a Visiting Fellow of Kellogg College. The city and university provide the settings for her murder mysteries: Death of an Englishman and An Inkling of Death.
