A great blue heron perches at a nature area in Longmont, Colorado.

In this vertical black-and-white photograph, a great blue heron fills the frame in left profile, with its neck and head tucked close to its body. It stands on its right leg atop an exposed tree root system while its left leg and foot slowly lift into the air. The background consists of calm pond water, with the upper third reflecting the dark vegetation along the opposing shoreline.

A beautiful, quiet moment of a great blue heron at rest in a wetland habitat so vital to its survival.

Wilson’s Snipe trying to hide in some reeds. They’re usually not in my area during summer, so this was a surprise find at one of my local wildlife spots. #Waders 🪶 #BirdOfTheDay #ECK
Plump bird with very long bill, brown & white crown stripes, and brown mottled back. There are buff stripes down the back, and multiple shades of brown barring on the sides. The subject is facing away from the viewer, but with head turned sideways looking back over its shoulder. The surroundings are reeds and shallow water.

Colorful falcon perched in near profile atop a snag, with the remains of a dragonfly in his right talons, with head turned to stare at the viewer. The upperside of the subject has patches of a rusty red and slate blue, spotted with black. The belly is light beige with a wash of faint rusty color on the upper and lower ends, and dark spots arranged in vertical "stripes". Finally, remember to apply the decals to the outside surface of the window, which can help reduce the reflections that confuse birds and deter them from flying into your windows. A few simple changes can make a big difference in helping keep our feathered friends safe!

Chirp Up @chirpup.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
When choosing window decals, look for ones with dense and complex patterns that provide plenty of visual coverage. Proper spacing is also important. For the best protection, decals should be placed approximately 2 inches apart vertically and 4 inches apart horizontally across the entire window.

Chirp Up @chirpup.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Did you know that window decals can help prevent birds from hitting your windows? Birds can mistake windows for open space because they see reflections of trees, plants, and the sky.

Spoonbills sweep their bill through shallow water in a side-to-side motion, using highly sensitive nerve endings inside the tip to feel for fish, crabs, and insects by touch. 🥄🦀 Also, I'm off grid for a couple of weeks, see you soon. 🔌 #Birds #Wildlife #Nature #BirdOfTheDay #ECK
A crisp, high-definition mid shot side-profile portrait of a Royal Spoonbill against a softly blurred, mottled green and yellow background. The bird faces left, showcasing its long, dark, charcoal-grey bill that widens into a distinct flat, spoon-like shape at the tip. Its head and neck are covered in soft, white feathers, with a subtle cream-colored wash near the crown. Its eye is a striking, vivid ruby-red, bordered by a patch of black facial skin and a small hint of yellow skin just above the eye. The lighting is clean and even, capturing the fine, textured ridges along the surface of its bill.
