Ashe was silent for so long, staring at the table, his fists tense at his sides, that Claude thought he might simply walk away. Finally, he wiped his face with a sleeve and let out a long breath.
“You’re wrong. About what you said in the library.” His eyes—two round, deep wells of sorrow—met Claude’s. “I’ll never be the kind of knight I once thought. But you’ve inspired me not to give up, not completely. I wanted to be a knight to protect people, and I’ve finally found something else worth protecting with all that I have. All I ask is that you let me try.”
For all he complained about Ashe’s guilt, Claude’s own attempted to claw its way through his chest with each breath. For all he bemoaned Ashe’s stubbornness, Claude wanted to lie prostrate at the feet of every deity worshipped on the continent and beyond to thank them for its existence. None of Claude’s distancing had worked. Ashe was still here.
He was here and asking for trust, effectively putting his life in Claude’s hands. Willing to fight for a church that lied to him.
He didn’t know his own Goddess had never heard a single one of his prayers.
He didn’t even know Claude’s real name.
“You have to stay alive for that, you know,” said Claude.
The first hint of a smile, like a seed sprouting through hard ground. “I know.”

"Hm," Felix agreed.
She was walking alongside Felix on a planter that was only a few inches off the ground, but she wobbled every few steps. It made Felix nervous, but he kept his hands to himself. Last week she'd called him "chauvinistic and overbearing" because he'd offered to carry her books to class.
"Lysithea got a passing grade on her first try, of course," Annette said. "But she won't tell me what was on the exam. I asked her twice."
"She's just jealous," Felix said.
"Of what?" Annette said. "She knows Dark Spikes now, did I tell you that? I barely can cast a basic level offensive spell, and she's already moved on to advanced."
Felix was sort of listening, he really was. But Annette's head had lined up exactly with the dogwood tree behind her. Maybe it was because she was a few inches taller than normal. The pink flowers looked nice against her hair, Felix thought. Did pink and red go well together, usually? He wasn't sure. They looked nice now.
Felix reached out and plucked a flower off the dogwood tree. He handed it to Annette, cutting her off mid-sentence.
"And if I don't catch up this year, I'm never going to -oh! What's this?" she asked.
Felix shrugged. "Looks nice with your hair," he said.
Annette stared at it, open mouthed, for a good few seconds. Then she hopped off the planter and stared up at Felix.
"You weren't even *listening*, were you?" she said. "Youre the worst sometimes, Felix! And I'm late to choir practice."
She turned and ran before he could apologize. He wouldn't have, either way, but she didn't even give him a chance.
But on the other hand, she took the flower with her.
She was a confusing girl.

“Edelgard, wait,” said Claude. He hadn’t released his ever-present grip on his bow, and now he dropped the reins in order to nock an arrow. The Emperor turned her hard gaze to him, taking in the weapon trained at her forehead.
“Claude,” she said, as cold as her eyes, but not without pain. The use of his first name, as he had done with her, pried open the smallest window of hope between Claude’s bruised ribs. “I wondered when we would next meet.”
“Will you not talk with us? Will you refuse to surrender?”
Her eyes darted over his shoulder as a crash sounded from the bottom of the steps. Still, she did not move. “Your ideals, I understand they're not so far removed from my own. But without sufficient knowledge of this land's suffering, I simply can't entrust Fódlan to you!”
Claude had learned, after his arrival in his mother’s homeland, after his year at the Officer’s Academy, after all his years spent thrust into Alliance leadership, that Fódlan’s prejudice and isolationism masked a nest of bitter internal wounds. He had hoped to uncover them in due course, without adding to the scars. His arm shook slightly, and he bit back the desperate wish to ask her what else could possibly be hidden among the depths of the Church to warrant her crusade. He knew the secrets were there, lamented his own lack of time and resources to determine whether the Central Church was in fact the paragon of faith it claimed to be.
At the same time, it was impossible to know whether Edelgard’s plans for Fódlan would coexist nicely with his own. Maybe it was easier this way, in the end.
