I went to my first @neuroethology.org conference and it was a blast! I had the honor of serving as chair and the first speaker of the Rhythms and Homeostatic Control session. Thanks to everyone who came to the session and to all the science friends I made! 🩷 #ICN2026

I went to a paint your own pottery place and now have the best cup ever. A Sip-ridinid cup as @stoilovamarina.bsky.social expertly suggested.
A glazed ceramic espresso cup with black speckled glaze as a background, a white and grey moon on the cup behind a cypridinid ostracod crustacean

The functions of bioluminescence are many. Marine creatures use it to lure prey, startle predators, court mates, and disguise their silhouettes. Some even seem to use it to exact revenge. Just one of the topics discussed in our latest episode, w/ Dr. Sönke Johnsen! Listen: disi.org/the-sparklin...

Inspiring presidential talk from @jessicalwarelab.bsky.social this morning at #evol2026. I'm left feeling hopeful about the future of our scientific community and even more in love with insects! 🪲
A slide from the presidential presentation that says: "in one generation we can 1. Establish and codified policies for ethics & equity 2. Increase the systematics literacy worldwide 3. Grow our community to reflect the diversity of human experience 4. Disrupt misinformation channels by sharing our knowledge and expertise 5. Protect biodiversity & our collections". Today we #standupforscience🔬 I almost didn't go to this because I felt so overwhelmed by all of the causes we need to fight for now. If you're feeling this way too, know that anything you do to fight is a win. You cannot do all the good the world needs, but the world needs all the good you can do.

It only took 20+ years, but the "Mystery Mollusc" paper came out this week. It is a swimming nudibranch that gallops in slow motion through the deep water-column. To top it off, it is bioluminescent, and we were able to film its glow with our special low-light camera.🦑🧪 www.mbari.org/news/mbari-r...

You would never do this. Warn your friends to never do this. Never ever. The best ppl warn everybody.
Once again, I DO NOT recommend students go to libgen (dot) rs and download books for their upcoming courses. I am NOT advocating for getting and sharing free pdfs of required texts. DON'T DO IT.Avoid them as much as possible, the links go:

pdfdrive.comYou also definitely don't want to be installing the unpaywall.org chrome extension. After all, who needs a super handy #openaccess tool that allows you, with a click of a button, to access any closed article?I also HATE this website archive.org, i do not recommend!! Definitely don't use email generators to "borrow books from there

This Firefly Friday, I'm thinking about the female California Pink Glow Worm I got to see this summer. Contrary to popular belief, fireflies do exist on the west Coast! (I was too excited and forgot to take photos, so this one is from the Xerces Society)
A beautiful female California pink glow worm It resembles a hot pink beetle larvae with a bright green/yellow glow from its light organ on its last segments

Hello!👋 I want to know how bioluminescent animals know when to glow. 💡 Right now I study the evolution of biological rhythms in bioluminescent Caribbean ostracods. Previously, I've studied the evolution of femme fatale fireflies. Only time can tell what I'll do next! ⏰
Femme fatale firefly female (Photuris sp.) eating a smaller male firefly (Photinus sp.). The prey firefly is glowing. The fireflies are on a paper towel on a marble countertopPhoto of me underwater, wearing a snorkel mask, snorkel in my mouth, a bathing suit, and pink split fins putting up double peace signs because I only know one pose. I am over a Caribbean coral reef.A male ostracod (Photeros sp.) With a photoshopped top hat and Rolex sea-dweller watch
