Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

Respectfully, what this commentator misses is that much of romance is already algorithmic, even if it is human-generated. Any genre that puts "tropes" first reduces art creation to production and consumption. It is being scripted through you. In this way, JCO is identifying a likeness with AI.

This is immensely wise. There is sometimes a rebuff of the premise that pain or trauma ought to be responded to with empathy. But people miss that compassion is not the same as agreement. If the goal is to help someone move forward, care is part of the process of correction.

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

September 30 is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day. Today is a time to raise awareness of the ongoing impacts of residential schools and remember the children who never came home. How are you honouring the day?

Today, in Canada, is the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation. Its watchword is that "Every Child Matters". It serves as a mandate toward inclusion, that ignoring the suffering of certain kinds of children & regarding them as less deserving of care & concern, is inexcusable & cannot be tolerated

What's perverse is that this outcome is not inconsistent with MAHA ideology, which evinces suspicion at modern medicine's ability to avoid disease. To it, "health" is nature working without interruption. It is a program of eugenics, in which ppl are made to fight off illness by dint of their health

No shade on “Furious”, which I loved, but, despite being a Brooklyn-based NYPD detective, Scoot McNairy’s character sounded like he was from the South Side of Boston. Right? If this was on purpose, I love it. If this was a happy accident, I love it.

Intimate mentorship is replete with potential, both for nurturing and for abuse. It would be a shame to lose the former by dint of failing to address the latter. I wonder if universities have contemplated (or implemented) training for advisors, perhaps via intensives taught by ed faculty specialists

Interesting (I think) constitutional-conventional question: in King Charles III's capacity as the King of Canada, does he retain his status as the head of the Anglican Church? If so, by implication, does Canada, too, have a state religion? (Or does his status shift to the UCC?) My guess is: no.
