Chequertree @chequertree.bsky.social · 09/09/2026I've seen no field signs on my local patch for than 10 years although I think a single male investigating rare bred sows was shot a few years ago. Everyone with 5 acres wanted to play at shooting them & now we've lost a potentially useful resource. Wildlife charities don't dare to campaign for them. 110

Chequertree @chequertree.bsky.social · 04/08/2026I haven't either but I don't go that way very often and as you say timing and mowing probably matter. A lot of people seem to have given up on mowing this summer. I wonder if Autumn Ladies Tresses is a possibility there too? 000
Chequertree @chequertree.bsky.social · 03/08/2026Probably well worth checking a few High Weald cricket pitches and village greens at the moment. 000

Chequertree @chequertree.bsky.social · 27/06/2026I went out early yesterday morning for what was likely to be my one chance to see a local Purple Emperor this year. Butterflies were not enjoying the heat, disappearing by the minute as they took shelter. After a gruelling 3 hours of walking I got back to the shaded car park & this chap was waiting 191
Chequertree @chequertree.bsky.social · 23/06/2026Thanks Marc, I'll try to get some photos on a cooler day, I wasn't carrying any camera gear today as I was weighed down with water to keep me alive while surveying in an oven! My jaw hit the floor when I saw it. The stream is probably acidic as it's in an area with Folkestone Sand and Sandgate beds. 120
Chequertree @chequertree.bsky.social · 23/06/2026Rather extraordinarily I stumbled across a Golden Ringed Dragonfly laying eggs in a tiny shaded stream at a site East of Maidstone today. Is anyone aware of any sightings of this Western and Northern species away from the far South-west of the county? 210
Chequertree @chequertree.bsky.social · 08/06/2026The spectacularly pretty Mullein Moth caterpillars in the garden have been fattening up fast in the past week. I see them much more often than I do the adult moth, occasionally feeding on Buddleia leaves rather than Mulleins. 010

Chequertree @chequertree.bsky.social · 12/03/2026Folkestone Cemetery also has a fantastic display of these. Most of the graves there are from the early 20th Century so I'm assuming the daffs were planted around the same time. 000

Chequertree @chequertree.bsky.social · 10/03/2026Anywhere with lots of Sallow in South & East Kent is well worth checking both now & in June, suspect they will have already spread quite a way from the known sites. I had one in the garden in 2024 & I'm a fair few miles from the core area. Weird that I saw more of these than Small Torts last year! 010

Chequertree @chequertree.bsky.social · 18/11/2025I only ever seem to have small quantities of fruit available to me as most is out of reach, would be lovely to have buckets of them one year to do all kinds of drink and pudding experiments!
