Tuesday 4:25 pm: A disturbance in the western gulf will likely intensify into a hurricane given absence of shearing winds that could disrupt it’s circulation and very warm gulf waters below. Upper level disturbance over Texas moving east, taking storm northward Friday.

There is an increasing risk of dangerous wind and storm surge impacts along portions of the northern Gulf Coast. Watches could be required on Wednesday. Residents from Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle should closely monitor the latest forecast updates and ensure they have a hurricane plan in place
National Hurricane Center forecast cone for Tropical Depression Nine, issued Tuesday, October 6, 2026. The depression is located over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico with maximum sustained winds of 35 mph. The forecast track takes the system northeast across the Gulf, with strengthening to a hurricane possible before reaching the northern Gulf Coast near the Florida Panhandle Friday. The system is then forecast to move inland through the Southeast and toward the Ohio Valley over the weekend. The cone represents the probable path of the storm’s center and does not show the storm’s size.Preliminary probability forecast for tropical-storm-force winds from Tropical Depression Nine through Sunday, October 11. The highest probabilities extend from the central Gulf of Mexico northeast toward the northern Gulf Coast, with the greatest chances offshore south of Alabama and the Florida Panhandle. Lower probabilities extend into coastal Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and the Florida Panhandle.

Sometimes you just have to draw a line in the sand and say something is ready. I've spent the last month or so not only adding level II site functionality to Heimdall, but what I consider to be genuinely novel functionality and interactivity. It's live for you to try at heimdall.stormscale.io

NSF–DOE Rubin Observatory @rubinobservatory.org · 05/10/2026
While mountains give us high-altitude dark skies, they disrupt smooth airflow, forcing the air to break into turbulent pockets. This atmospheric jitter is called "seeing." NSF–DOE Rubin Observatory was intentionally built where coastal airflow passes smoothly over the ridge. 🔭🧪
Observatory perched atop a rocky mountain with layered hills fading into the distance under a golden sunset sky.Sunset casting warm orange light over high desert mountains with an observatory perched on a ridge at left.Rubin Observatory perched atop its mountain summit site on Cerro Pachón. The observatory is boot-shaped at lower left with long white service building extending left and silver dome sticking up. The dome's vertical slit is open, revealing the telescope in the blackness within. The night sky is peppered with the pinpricks of stars. The Little Beehive Cluster of stars is a denser collection of pinpricks to the upper right of the observatory.Illustration showing smooth ocean air flowing over a mountain, with turbulence forming on the mountain's opposite side. Two insets show the impact of turbulence on an image of a star: without turbulence the star is sharp, while with turbulence it's blurred. Text reads "A site chosen for steady air. Smooth, stable air flows in from the ocean..then gets disrupted by mountains, creating turbulence."

Nolo crossed the International Date Line and entered the Western Pacific over the weekend, being reclassified from a hurricane to Typhoon Nolo. Nolo is the equivalent of a Category 3 storm, and is forecast to remain over the open ocean as it continues westward.

TROPICAL UPDATE🌀 The chance for development is going up in the western Gulf. Invest 92L has an 80% chance of forming in the next 7 days. It could be a tropical depression by mid-week. Impacts should track east of AR later this wknd into early next week, but it's too early to know for sure. #ARwx

"But the handicapped need cars!" No, what they need are options in mobility. The tech exists to enable their freedom of independent mobility, but almost always what is lacking is the enabling infrastructure. Bike lanes and quality sidewalks serve everyone.

Streetlights on - time to come home! Also, my mom has a piercing whistle and we lived on a hill. If she needed to summon me, she would come out and whistle. I could hear it from most of the neighborhood away - more than 1/2 mile away.

A big part of moving to the suburbs was that the road danger and the weird of living near the homeless shelter meant that essentially my 7yo had to stay in the house without an adult. COVID made it so much worse as the shelter population exploded and the drivers went absolutely insane.

Otherwise, at about 5 or 6 I was allowed to wander up and down the street. By 8 I could go on my own to other parts of the neighborhood (watching helicopters land at the hospital). New city, but by 12 I could go to the rec center and stores across the new major street and by 14 it was anywhere.

When I was 6 or 7, my parents would send me to the grocery store at the end of the street to pick up a single item, but the big deal was that it crossed N. Detroit St. which was U.S. 68 - technically out of the neighborhood in 1990s Xenia Ohio. That was by far the most dangerous part of the trip.

Our built infrastructure robs kids of their freedom of independent mobility. Streets are dominated by oversized vehicles, piloted by aggressive and distracted drivers where one mistake can turn lethal. We sacrificed child development to subsidize the auto industry.

I believe that roads and tires are a huge source of environmental microplastics already and there are plenty of potential harms in the rubber. Hopefully hopefully the dosage is small. Not nearly the friction of tires on the road at least. Still an obvious place to watch
