Please see this as a general reminder that you're not alone. Many of us reject, refuse, repudiate artificial intelligence and the technology industry: Guest et al. (2026). Against the Uncritical Adoption of 'AI' Technologies in Academia. Digital Culture & Education doi.org/10.5281/zeno...
Artificial intelligence (AI) companies and their rhetoric infringe on academia in harmful ways, mirroring past uncritical acceptance of industry logics, such as those of tobacco and petroleum. In this position piece, we tease apart and explain why phrases like 'generative AI' impede scholarly discussion because by design these expressions are used to dazzle and sidestep scrutiny. Furthermore, we contend with the AI industry's logics to enable rejecting frames such as: that we must embrace the future, that this hype cycle is unique, that anthropomorphism and circular reasoning hold water when discussing AI systems, and that students are now all cheating or all need to use AI. To these ends, we expound on why universities must take their role seriously to a) counter the AI industry's marketing, hype, and harm; and to b) safeguard higher education, critical thinking, expertise, academic freedom, and scientific integrity. For each point we raise, we include pointers to relevant work to further inform and convince our colleagues.

As many of you know, the German academic system offers very few permanent jobs, which are mostly full professor positions, while the bulk of academic work is done by a vast number of fixed-term academic staff. Over the past decades, Germany added <1k permanent jobs but >100k (!) fixed-term.

Shoutout to bsky for teaching me how to formulate my opinion regarding the inaturalist situation. It's apparently coherent enough that it's now the most liked comment in the thread. forum.inaturalist.org/t/what-is-th...
comment screenshot that says:

This echoes the ethical concerns visual artists have regarding gen AI: credit, consent, compensation.

People are fed up by anything labeled gen AI due to the overall disregard of consent in data scraping schemes. The comments on twitter and bluesky regarding this situation have been scathing. Regardless of iNat’s intent and eventual use, there’s a big trust issue growing here, which will put people off from using the platform.

Edit: Do note that us nature folks don’t live in a science bubble. A lot of us know, or ourselves are writers, visual artists, musicians whose work have been scraped, stolen, and regurgitated by Open AI and Google AI without the three C’s above. When we say we’re boycotting Gen AI on principle, this is what we mean.

That way the Holocaust is no longer entirely rooted in European antisemitism and colonialism. It's a win-win for the German state: they get to displace their role in historical and modern antisemitism unto a population of 'foreigners' that have very little political capital in German politics.

Edgelord politics is a game of chicken with one’s own conscience. You know the wrongness of what you are doing, but you push forward, because the thing you are resisting is empathy, the thing that makes you human. The goal is to transcend you humanity, to become brutal.
