🌏 How should carbon removal projects be governed ❓   📣  In our new paper in Nature Climate Change (@natclimate.nature.com), we asked 10,852 people in six counties to judge hypothetical carbon removal projects. ⚖️ We find that getting procedural and distributive fairness right is key 👇

Strongest in Brazil, followed by UK and Italy, depending on the profit-allocation approach.

🤝 Share the wealth: profit-sharing or not-for-profit set-ups (like public utilities) also improved support; developers keeping profits for themselves fared worst ⚖️ Tons are not enough: higher removal capacity could not offset a lack of consultation or privatization of profits 3/

Hypothetical projects varied by who's in charge, how decisions are made, how profits are handled and how much CO₂ they remove. What stood out: 👇 🗣️ Process and fairness first: consulting local people or experts before permitting raised support by 1.0–1.7 points (10-point scale) 2/

4/ Our country heatmaps show the conservatism-to-denialism link was strongest/most significant in the US, UK, Canada, Germany, Spain, Switzerland — weaker or inconsistent elsewhere. National political cultures are also important.

2/ What we found: conservatism → more climate denialism → less support for SG. That held everywhere. But once we controlled for denialism, conservatism's own "direct" effect vanished for SAI and space-based geoengineering — denialism explained 50-58% of the link.

Yes, I remember it... this is not to say though that (re)planting of trees does not have a role, particularly when done properly, e.g. multi-species, endemic. But it does seem to skew discussions with the public when it comes to CDR.
