@drrobbellamy.bsky.social is a Senior Lecturer in Climate and Society at University of Manchester. His research explores how society perceives and governs climate solutions, including CO₂ removal (CDR) and solar radiation modification (SRM).

I have a new @nytimes.com guest essay w/ @davidkeith.bsky.social about sunlight reflection. We note its not a solution for climate change and at best a band aid to treat systems, and suggest if its ever done it should only be to replace the cooling from air pollution today:
nytimes.com
Opinion | A Responsible Way to Cool the Planet
A small, carefully scaled geoengineering program could compensate for the loss of cooling as we eliminate sulfur pollution.

Rising global temperatures increase the chance of crossing climate tipping points – abrupt, potentially irreparable shifts in our climate system. Only decarbonisation can sustainably lower the risk long-term, but our current trajectory makes several tipping points viable over the next century. (1/5)
