New to the LangLib: JavaGen, a language of nothing but Java interfaces and one subtype query, which is just enough to compute anything by a clever co/contra-variance interplay. Bonus: a Lean proof that Java generics are Turing-complete (Grigore, POPL'17). github.com/ilyasergey/l...

As a Programming Language nerd, I have a soft spot for esoteric languages (esolangs), which are built by enthusiasts for fun and to make a point. Over the weekend I started collecting them in Lean, so, please, meet Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, PL edition: github.com/ilyasergey/l... →
Four dark panels showing the same program in four languages:
a Piet painting of coloured pixels, Whitespace rendered as labelled
space/tab/linefeed blocks, a FRACTRAN list of 58 fractions, and two lines
of Malbolge line noise. A badge in the top-right corner reads
"answer := 42".

currently reading gödel, escher, bach and this letter from a mathematician's father begging him not to follow in his footsteps by trying to prove euclid's fifth postulate is really beautiful
Incidentally, Bolyai's father, Farkas (or Wolfgang) Bolyai, a close friend of the great Gauss, invested much effort in trying to prove Euclid's fifth postulate. In a letter to his son Janos, he tried to dissuade him from thinking about such matters:

You must not attempt this approach to parallels. I know this way to its very end. I have traversed this bottomless night, which extinguished all light and joy of my life. I entreat you, leave the science of parallels alone .... I thought I would sacrifice myself for the sake of the truth. I was ready to become a martyr who would remove the flaw from geometry and return it purified to mankind. I accomplished monstrous, enormous labors; my creations are far better than those of others and yet I have not achieved complete satisfaction.
For here it is true that si paullum a summo discessit, vergit ad imum. I turned back when I saw that no man can reach the bottom of this night. I turned back unconsoled, pitying myself and all-mankind .... I have traveled past all reefs of this infernal Dead Sea and have always come back with broken mast and torn sail. The ruin of my disposition and my fall date back to this time. I thoughtlessly risked my life and happiness--aut Caesar aut nihil.

Really cool research by a small lab called standard intelligence, appears to be a multi-modal, video first computer use focus model. It looks super super cool. The sauce mainly seems to be in the vision encoder they used, which appears to have been trained on a compression objective.

just realized this is basically just hinton station from @eudoxia.bsky.social's eog581
Her world had a spartan geometry: bare wireframe walls and eight bit colour. A city of glass buildings, of transparent towers made of logic, floated in the empty space near the origin, its inhabitants were stylized human shapes, empty of texture, their voices were identical.

Hinton Station was a virtual world in six dimensions. Its people were a clade of mathematicians who had gone into the computer to live in the Platonic realm. Gradually they lost sight of the world and disappeared into their own abstractions.

For its people, the acme of life was writing exegeses of Hinton, Cartan, and Poincaré, and debating and dispassionately refuting them. Immense towers of abstraction, crystalline forests of Gentzen trees were built, and then torn down. And this went on forever. And all that is natural — all that is a gift from God — was absent from them. In the computer, all things are a product of human labour, and all exists fleetingly, and is torn down on a whim.

Things I notice sometimes, people are a little misguided about the environmental impact of AI. A ChatGPT query uses about 10x the energy of a Google search. DeepSeek uses about the same amount as a Google search. Driving a car 1km uses 17,000x the energy of Googling.

We are in the very, very, very early days of computing, and there is a strange future that stretches out far ahead of us, vastly longer and vastly stranger than any of us can possibly imagine.

There are many path dependencies in the modern computing industry. There are many decisions made decades ago that have heavily shaped modern computing, where a different outcome could easily have led us down a wildly divergent path.

The modern range of popular operating systems were designed decades before the internet, on the assumption that the user was an expert who wasn’t stupid enough to run untrusted software on such expensive business equipment. The failure of operating systems to provide acceptable sandboxing of applications littered the early internet with security landmines. Browsers on the other hand provide sandboxing by default, and web apps began growing in popularity as soon as Google made Javascript run fast with V8. If the operating systems of the 90s and 00s had better security models, the domination of browsers as a de facto operating system may not have occurred.

If CPUs had supported efficient context switches directly between userspace programs, the performance bottlenecks that pushed the 1990’s growth in driver code into the operating system may never have happened. In 1995, Linux was a mere 15,000 lines of assembly, and began growing rapidly once it bolted the bloated USB drivers into the kernel. We could easily have taken an alternate path where operating systems stayed small, and where hobbyists or startups could compete with Microsoft.
