The Canadian left seems to be slowly moving away from its rigid anti-developer stance, which is good because the left position has generally been to further discipline developers to the point of restricting housing supply, while never putting up enough money to grow the public housing stock

Funny how Palantir thinks it can control everyone's lives with algorithms and right wing figures think you can run the state with algorithms and Altman thinks you can replace every worker with algorithms and Black Rock wants to allocate capital with algorithms but oh economic planning is impossible

Given America seems currently to have lost the nerve to invade Cuba, I doubt the annexation threats are going anywhere anytime soon, but it irritates me that this calculation is on everyone's mind.

Mainly just because the inclusion of dynamics is way more trivial than dynamicists give it credit for, and a system being dynamical is in no tension with its interpretability as an information-processing system, nor does it preclude or obviate the need for labelling its attractors "symbolically".

The way embodiment takes influenced by that damned Nazi Heidegger tend to fall over is in the assertion (often left implicit) that the causal relevance of an embodiment condition is of constitutive relevance to a cognitive mechanism. However, this entailment cannot be used consistently.

I haven't taken the singularity too seriously since I was a teenager (it's way too vague to be all that useful an idea) but it makes me a little annoyed and uncomfortable that it's mostly just conservatives who are having a go at speaking coherently on it right now.

The Kuril islands are disputed territory between Russia and Japan, given to the USSR at the end of WW2 and de facto occupied by Russia, but never formally ceded. Iturup/Etorufu is the longest, where "the far north" is roughly what the Kurils are called in Japanese. ep. 5 of tGitS takes place here.

Routledge's intro text on social and political philosophy is and remains a work of fantastic pedagogical value, but it's particularly amusing that even when it wants to throw conservatives a bone, it can only think to do so from the left
"[...]shared endeavors should be a non-political, and so in a way ‘private, activity is to underestimate the necessity of these practices and connections for people’s pursuit of their values. For in an area where such ties are either not established or disintegrate, the effectiveness of the principles of justice to ''hat degree breaks down. (Recall that the
communitarian argument pointed to the need for shared civic identity
focused on the promotion of community values for the stability that
enforcing rules of justice requires.) It then becomes a matter of justice,
not merely expediency, to foster the social cohesion necessary for principles of right to have effect. Moreover, the line between public and
private here is an exceptionally blurry one, as state power is used in
many ways to indirectly foster the collective activity of groups and the
general public which, in turn, creates this kind of civic feeling. Public
parks, city plazas, public television and radio, monuments and museums, neighborhood murals, meetings spaces, and countless other supplementary resources are generally provided by political institutions (that is, paid for by public money) and are essential for the successful carrying out of the collective activity we are considering. Political acts —
legislative provisions and the use of public funding — are necessary to
support these communal actions; without such state action, this activity would almost certainly devolve (a tendency we will say more about
in a moment), so in so far as they are necessary to support just institutions, then state action (direct or indirect) is necessary for their
existence. The good of supporting these sorts of group activities in support of common aims goes hand in hand with enforcing justice, rather
than occupying a lower priority in the ordering of political provisions."

It's honestly kind of an unresolved tension in the literature as to what exactly justifies computational theories of mind, but pedagogy is decades behind the discourse. Rarely when the basic metaphysical basis of cognitivism is raised does anyone even talk about how functionalism was never one thing

What exactly is a conservative lifestyle? Genuine question. Like, let's set aside whatever extremist influencers with their women "voluntarily" giving up their bank accounts and such are up to. You're a red Tory and you live a "conservative lifestyle". What does that mean?

Every so often I turn up a comment section with people complaining about liberals being too extreme. Sometimes these people are, I believe, genuine moderates. Your red Tory types. But I do have to wonder, which liberals are they on about? Surely not Canada's, but America's are quite conservative.

I get frustrated when people deny the violence inherent in politics, voice a desire for political ends in willing ignorance of the atrocity of means. That is just liberalism, and I remember also holding out hope for gentle and innocent victory. Maybe I just resent what I know I have lost.

One thing I always had some trouble with is traditional math education is delivered on a fixed schedule and it's assumed that if you can't keep up, you're not gonna learn it. Self-study however can be self-paced, and most people given more time can learn a lot of higher math.

It is interesting that these days the connectionist critique of classicism, which still runs deep in the literature as well as in-person (and is especially prevalent in neurosci) seems an artifact of the natsci presentation of mathematics. In pure math lin alg, vector spaces can be anything you want

"Neurosymbolic" doesn't actually mean anything because sometimes we're processing over syntactic structures with neurons and sometimes we're adding a layer that sends an embedding space to a basis that's decoded to individual symbols, not noticing that any set of symbols is a basis almost for free

I've grown pretty sick of commenting on AI but one thing does come to mind and it's that there's a lot more idle speculation on what might (philosophically) be going on inside very large neural networks that produce text than on solving the problem of intentionality.

I have this moment of agony every time I hear someone insist on the possibility of physical hypercomputation. I don't know why so many very smart people think it's real, when the theory is always (and necessarily) suggestive of the use of an actual infinity in order to obtain a computed result.

wrt this, the debate that was over 45 years ago yet seems never to die (classicism/connectionism) turns on this idea that the continuum is in some sense irreconcilable with the "discrete" symbolism of classical states. This could not be further from the truth, but our arguments tend to be inelegant

Incels fail at sexual market value theory because if they really believed, they'd invest to sell upmarket. Looksmaxxers and grindbros fail because they only invest in 1 or 2 dimensions of product quality. This is why performative males win. They assess product-market fit. Can't perform? Temu male.
