One edge of the Woodland Arts Fair in Lexington (KY). It was hot. It was humid. It was a lot of fun. I bought a pottery mug, some pizza, some local beer, some Cuban-style ham croquettes, and a bottle of local sake for the road. #WoodlandArtsFair

McConnell Springs is the green heart of Lexington (KY). This is where the city was founded in 1775. Now it is a beautiful inner-city park. Lots of young families here today.
A round light green fairly deep natural spring surrounded by trees, wildflowers, and other plants. Some are reflected in the water. A stacked rock wall with mortar that has held up quite well for many years. If it looks like something from Ireland, it is because the masons who made the earlier ones came from there.A great bur oak supported by a metal and concrete infrastructure. These are quite old and existed long before anyone of European descent came here. A large groundhog (or woodchuck) on a large mossy fallen tree trunk. It was trying to hide from me by being very still.

Walking through Walter Bradley Park in Midway (KY). The broad creek and the tall trees make for a wondrously cool stroll. This Midwegian park is also a veritable wonderland for fungi of various types. #Midway #fungi

Small, grey, delicately long-stemmed mushrooms growing in a line beside a skinny exposed tree root on a forest trail. A flat tree stump with patches of velvety sienna-colored fungi on its surface.

A wild grape vine growing along the Legacy Trail in Lexington (KY). Kentucky is full of these. In the Appalachian part of the state they are known as “possum grapes” because our only native marsupial is apparently fond of them.

Saturday walking on a partly shady horse trail in Lexington (KY). The horses and riders that I saw took a gravel path behind me to go over the creek. On foot, I may get a little muddy going this way.

I showed this graph in class yesterday on how measles cases in the United States plummeted dramatically after the vaccine was licensed in 1963. It’s not subtle and I could not resist observing: “This stunning design in measles cases was not thanks to vitamin A. It was not due to beef tallow.”

This is a federal prison but it was formerly the United States Narcotics Farm where people with opiate addictions could volunteer for treatment. William S. Burroughs was here as a prisoner. The jazz music here was supposedly excellent due to a rotating lineup of patients.

Happy International Women's Day from Ada Limon
HOW TO TRIUMPH LIKE A GIRL

I like the lady horses best,
how they make it all look easy,
like running 40 miles per hour
is as fun as taking a nap, or grass.
I like their lady horse swagger,
after winning. Ears up, girls, ears up!
But mainly, let's be honest, I like
that they're ladies. As if this big
dangerous animal is also a part of me,
that somewhere inside the delicate
skin of my body, there pumps
an 8-pound female horse heart,.
giant with power, heavy with blood.
Don't you want to believe it?
Don't you want to lift my shirt and see
the huge beating genius machine
that thinks, no, it knows,
it's going to come in first.
