It's telling that men would rather try to invent tech to replace humans' role in caregiving than step up as equal partners in parenting. Telling, that is, in that it shows how financial capitalism and patriarchy work together to dissuade men from doing "unprofitable" labor, like the work of care.

It's not just a matter of dropping some state-wide exams (two of which they'll need to keep for ESSA purposes) - it's an entire restructuring of assessment, standards, and curriculum across the state. That they haven't figured out yet.

NYS is a non-textbook adoption state. Section 701 of NYS Education (EDN) Law Chapter 16, Title 1, Article 15 explicitly says NYSED can't mandate textbooks (which has come to mean curriculum resources writ large.) So the way the state has ensured consistency against Standards has been the Regents.

I rarely, rarely say or believe that "you don't get it unless you've experienced it" but when it comes to NYS Regents, unless you've gone through NYS HSs or taught at the HS level, it's hard to understand what this shift means. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/14/n...

New York Moves Away from Regents Exams for High School Seniors (Gift Article)
A state board authorized phasing out the tests, long viewed as a rite of passage for high school seniors, as a diploma requirement. What replaces them is an open question.

Getting rid of the Regents exams is a mistake. And I say this as someone who is 100% a fan and advocate for the Consortium Schools (who have been mostly Regents free for almost two decades.) They, though, have an entire infrastructure to ensure students are held to the NYS Learning Standards.

Let’s be clear. The Clinton administration tried to tell the incoming Bush administration that they would spend more time on Bin Laden than anything else. John Ashcroft, who lost his election to a dead man, decided to focus on pornography instead. About 8 1/2 months later, 9/11. 1/

Teaching elementary school is a very physical job. What is appropriate dress for someone who squats down a lot, sits on the floor cross legged a lot and bends over a lot? What if they also spend time literally running around outside with children?

It has always been a mistake to focus on funding as the defining trait of public school schools. The question is whether the community that funds the schools has control over those schools through with Democratic processes. If not, the school is just as private as a military defense contractor.

You are missing the fact that most people suck: don't want to think hard; don't want to emotionally commit; don't wanna challenge their preconceptions; expect others to come up with easy answers and give them solutions on a platter. Most people just don't care to know shit

Methinks you underestimate the sheer mass of voters who know little and always looking for the next promise of change. Persuading them enough of them to vote for us is the only way to a trifecta—even as ~25-30% of the public are not targets for such efforts.

Yeah, but John Ashcroft lost to a dead man. He literally lost an election to a man who had literally died. And so he turned the justice department to investigate pornography, rather than Al-Qaeda's terrorism. We got 9/11 (in part) because John Ashcroft could not defeat a dead man.

The Pope says FACT CHECK YOUR SOURCES
communication depends directly on social trust and, in turn, shapes it. At the same time, truthful information does not aris from
centralized or automated control. In public discourse, the truth of facts has a rational dimension, as it requires verification, cross-checking of sources and responsible argumentation. Moreover, it is deeply relational, built through bonds of trust and shared practices, as well as an honest exchange with others and with the world. Only the shared pursuit of the veracity of facts, perceived as a common good, can provide a solid foundation for just communication.

I am so sick of this logic. Because we don't want to damage the lawn, let's get rid of the lawn— or that part of it. It's just destroying the village in order to "save" it. It's the same logic as Social Security cuts. It's just so dumb. It would remain stunning how dumb these people are.

I'm sorry, what? In writing my first monograph, I spent six weeks trying to track down a citation in TWO languages I didn't know. And good thing too, because the citation was wrong. That's scholarship. That's research. You know, the thing we're trained to do?!?
The reactions of some researchers on Twitter finally being held responsible for not having read the very paper they submitted are... something. Mainly, they don't think they should have to check every citation or make sure the data is real and accurate. Because it's too hard, I guess.

Pushy reminder from one school librarian to another: if you can alter your challenge policy, put a clause in there that prevents people not in your immediate school community (parents, students, staff, board) from placing challenges and limits each request to 1 book at a time. 1/2
