NEW: In late 2024, FBI investigators had enough evidence to launch a sweeping bribery probe that could ensnare top lawmakers, including Sen. Susan Collins. Then Trump was reelected and eviscerated the FBI and DOJ teams handling public corruption probes.

For a while, a common dilemma in video game RPGs was "Who do you support, the problematic hypernationalists or the rootless cosmopolitan hypocrites?" and I think it aged poorly seeing how the past decade has pretty conclusively proven the correct answer is "sign up with RCH and get over yourself."

Proof of a literacy crisis: pundit Derek Thompson can't read the studies he quotes. This is about "self-published genre fiction ... primarily sold on Amazon" and not “the book industry.” Imagine looking at TikTok slop and declaring “the film industry” is being replaced by AI actors and directors.
Derek Thompson
@DKThomp
Of the many, many books that predicted some dystopian effects of AI, few or none of them, to my knowledge, predicted that one of AI's first major effects would be to disrupt the book industry itself.

But that's exactly what seems to be happening.

- The number of AI-written books with any sales has grown by a factor of *19* since 2003
- Books with “substantial AI text” are making more money with every passing year
- Authors who don’t write with AI are earning less per book in almost every genre

The upshot: either Chang's account implies that we can't make mistakes -- which I at least take to be a reductio -- or it has no real advantage over more traditional accounts.

I have a new paper out at Philosophy of Science. (Open access link below.) Briefly: Hasok Chang's main argument for his account of truth is that it makes truth "verifiable" in practice. I show that if that's right, errors are impossible. doi.org/10.1017/psa....

I think the year should either be the year of decision or year of submission, but mixing the two seems bad. So either: 1. accepted in 2025 / [total decisions in 2025] -- i.e., (c) 2. submitted in 2025 and eventually acceptaced / submitted in 2025. I'd prefer 2 because it avoids double counting.

When it comes to confirmation, what matters for robustness can be boiled down to: 1. Does the hypothesis predict robustness? 2. Do the alternatives predict not robustness? If you answer yes to both, then you've got confirmation! It's that simple. (2/2)

FWIW: the *more* substantive issue is that they take "model report" to refer to "a proposition about what the model entails" (p. 46) while I take it to be a proposition about the model's target. As such, I think their criticisms simply don't land. But it's possible that I'm mistaken about that.
000
Corey Dethier @cdethier.bsky.social · 10/08/2025
Ultimately, this doesn't matter much to the argument -- the substantive disagreements are more important. But it's certainly the kind of thing you'd have hoped that the referees would catch!

*That* assertion is pretty clearly wrong. I make *exactly* the same qualification in the paragraph immediately preceding the one they cite. I then explicitly say that the qualifications are the same in the footnote attached to said sentence!

Corey Dethier @cdethier.bsky.social · 10/08/2025
What's more notable is their assertion that I qualify my claim that models provide evidence in a way that I don't qualify the claim that experiments do (the image is from page 46 of their paper).

Brian McLoone, Steven Orzack, and Elliot Sober have a new paper out in which they argue (among other things) that I'm wrong about robustness. I think *they're* wrong, of course -- indeed, I think I addressed all their arguments already in the paper they cite. Unsurprisingly, they disagree!

So I asked it to write the intro to an ethics paper in my style, since I've never published anything in ethics. The thesis it came up with? All injustice is ultimately epistemic injustice. So now I know what it is like to be roasted by an LLM. (3/3)

I mention this here because ChatGPT -- without being asked -- described my style using exactly those elements that I *aim* for. That was both flattering and slightly worrying. It then rewrote the intro to one of my published papers. Boring. (2/3)
