#Nolo is now a Category 4 hurricane and is forecast to strengthen to a category 5. It would be the fourth Cat 5 Pacific hurricane northeast of the date line in 2026, the most in one season in history. This is all happening amid record warm oceans, supercharged by El Niño and climate change.

The central pressure of Hurricane Polo is measured to be 889 millibars. That means more than 11% of the typical atmosphere at sea level is missing from the storm's center. It is the second strongest storm on record in the eastern Pacific Ocean, and one of the strongest in Earth's modern history.

Temperatures will soar across the Bay Area this week, with 90-degree readings possible in Oakland and even the hottest parts of San Francisco. But the real grueling part of this heat wave will be the overnight temperatures. Temperatures may not drop below 70 degrees Wednesday night. #CAwx

San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose could see their hottest temperatures so far this year, and exceptionally warm nights will make the heat wave more extreme.

Preliminary information about the M7.4 earthquake in Colombia

Reposted by City Disaster & Emergency Prep
Brandon Bishop @brandontbishop.bsky.social · 10/08/2026
Today's 7.4 Mw earthquake in Colombia is the region's largest earthquake below 50 km depth in the instrumental record. The second largest, a 7.3 Mw earthquake around 300 km south of today's earthquake, was 70 km deeper and had a lower reported intensity as a result.
All earthquakes in the USGS catalog for Cauca region (~1 degree North to ~5 degrees North along Colombia's west coast) larger than a magnitude of 5.5 from January 1, 1900 to today. Today's earthquake is highlighted in cyan. All but three large earthquakes in this time interval occur within ~100 km of today's earthquake. Red line marks the subduction zone plate boundary where the Nazca plate subducts beneath South America.

One last thing I want to highlight with the today's earthquake in Colombia is this estimate of shaking intensity from the USGS. Specifically, the double zone of darker orange that sit on either side of the earthquake's epicenter (the star in the image). Can you guess what's happening here?
USGS's map of estimated shaking intensity for the earthquake in Colombia. The earthquake occurred beneath the star-shaped marker in the center of the image. The highest intensity shaking is represented by dark orange lines. These lines do not go completely around the point the earthquake occurred at and instead form two lobes around it, one to the west and one to the east of the earthquake's location.

What’s that swirl on radar? It’s not a tropical storm… yet. It’s a mesoscale convective vortex (MCV), a temporary spin left behind by thunderstorms. It could develop over the next few days, but heavy rain is the main threat for Florida’s west coast for now.

Dangerous fire weather conditions expected in the Intermountain West through the middle of next week. Multiple days of exceptionally dry and breezy conditions will promote significant fire weather concerns for any new ignitions, lightning holdovers, and ongoing large fires across the western U.S.
Wildfires can escalate quickly. Wildfire growth can be terrifyingly sudden and deadly. Prepare ahead of time so you'll be ready. Clear brush away from your home to create defensible space. Use fire-resistant landscaping. Know your potential evacuation routes. Have an emergency supply kit ready to go.
