This is the funniest thing I've seen today, possibly ever
A tweet by SarahStarberry that says "oh god read the vertical axis" on top of a chart measuring AI models' release dates and model numbers rather than any real capabilities

a vast majority of pcb design is picking components and wiring them together as specified in datasheets, then routing the traces according to simple rules. designs are verifiable. there's already a decent amount of automation happening in this space but I expect this to be pretty beneficial.

the problem with claiming time-savings from personal assistant agents is that you're now a sysadmin and a developer. and then you learn the problems of data integration, the challenges of distributed systems, and the value of software that you don't have to maintain.

I've been doing a lot of research involving early 20th century newspapers and it's become obvious how much of the news is written to be used as historical propaganda. Obviously-false stories in the moment later become historical fact when the alternative views are removed or lost to time.

Back to the lustration/truth-and-reconciliation conversation: as for another user's suggestion to call it "the FAFO Commission," I'd say a Full Accounting for Federal Overreach investigatory panel sounds like the bee's knees.

You mean the thing that does Cliffs Notes of things it has read is not thinking at all and is just showing you Cliffs Notes of things it read? Crazy. People with functioning brains have told you over and over that LLMs don't think for themselves, but we are running out of functioning brains

So, I propose Trump's ability to muster violence spontaneously with a word, spoken into the digital ether and naming a specific enemy, is well conceived as "stochastic brownshirtism." When he speaks, he knows someone will understand what he's asking for, & will make it so, yet he has deniability.

I think about this essay all the time
It has also occluded something deeper. The philosopher Mark Wilson has observed that concepts often appear stable while the work they do shifts entirely as they move between domains. He calls this "wandering significance." "Decision" is wandering now. In the military context it means the system's output, a targeting nomination scored and forwarded. In journalism and tech criticism it means much the same, the thing the AI got wrong. In neither of these does it mean what it used to mean, which is a person choosing to do something for which they could be held accountable. People are still making decisions in that sense. Someone decided to compress the kill chain. Someone decided that deliberation was latency. Someone decided to build a system that produces a thousand targeting decisions per hour and call them high-quality. Someone decided to start this war. Several hundred people are sitting on Capitol Hill, refusing to stop it. Calling it an "AI problem" gives those decisions, and those people, a place to hide.

I really can't say it enough, but Brooks said it all in 1986. It's undeniable once you understand the accidental and essential complexity distinction. Open source software already solved most of the hard parts. Most devs don't spend their time writing hard code, they spend time in meetings.

Republicans, in their infinite wisdom, left a big gambling loophole in the Medicaid work requirements. I'm no fan of the gambling industry, but if you are on Medicaid and struggling to deal with the work requirements, taking a $580 bet on both sides of an outcome is one way of getting around them.
