FICTION
HERE ARE SOME WAYS IT COULD HAPPEN
ALEX MANLEY
Photography by Myles Fairhead
It could be covert. It could be black ops, Navy SEALs dropping like chunks of ice in the night from Sikorskies overhead, can't even hear the whump-whump-whump because they have crazy-smooth-blades technology that those military-industrial eggheads at MIT came up with. It could be jarheads with crampons scaling the Peace Tower.
Burrowing tunnels under 24 Sussex, wire cutters to the power lines.
Quick, surgical, like a pickpocket. Wouldn't realize the PM's gone til a day or two later and there's chaos in the House.
It could be out in the open, all pomp and circumstance. They could all line up in their Army Greens in broad daylight along the 49th like it's our very own Battle of Bunker Hill. Trumpets and shit, like someone just called the cavalry, like the Old West. Then "charge"
—watch them take Medicine Hat, Flin Flon, all of P.E.I., watch them plant Old Glory in the middle of Bloor and Yonge. CNN loops YouTube videos of camouflaged Bradleys rolling through the perfect Edmonton grid, row by row by row. Alaska would rejoice, destiny manifest. Spacious skies and amber waves of grain stretch from sea to shining sea, and some film school student would mash up clips of the explosions with dialogue from Strange Brew.
It could be an airstrike, with daisy cutters blowing holes in skyscrapers, making the buildings look like that spider sculpture in front of the National Gallery. For the hell of it, they could drop a nuke out East, on The Rock maybe, just to let us know they mean business.
They could smooth out the boreal forest like a hand sweeping a bunch of toothpicks off a table, or like NFB footage of a meteor crashing into the Canadian Shield, and the G.I.s would march through miles of empty wheat fields, taking pictures of each other posing with the world's biggest nickel, knocked on its side, or pissing on an inukshuk.
Maybe they won't wanna fight. Maybe it'll come on nice and slow and…
