For Metrolink at least given the lack of baggage they could reasonably throw some 80 seat double decker buses on the route if there was a private shuttle operator with 10-15 spare.

All of the Surf and Coast lines are on STRACNET. Key routes for US military movement by rail

Did Santa Fe not build Tejon Pass cut off because: A) Division of Highways scared them off B) they couldn’t justify it to their investment committee C) the idea was leverage to get SP to agree to a long term lease and upgrade of Tehachapi Pass D) all of the above?

This idea for Metrolink might mean ending a AVL train at Palmdale instead of Lancaster which would have an ~20 min time savings allowing the next trip to run on time. Now do you want to do this with an hourly or less often commuter rail service no but the idea will also work for light rail systems.

Certainly be nice to get entirely new stock for Capital corridor, central coast service and San Joaquin’s and refurbish all bi levels for Surfliner. That would probably mean 50 new sets (I’m assume we sell the ventures on)

An old F40 turned into a NPCU. There was 1-2 crossing issues which to my understanding weren’t even issues with Airo but a misconfiguration/error on BNSFs part but BNSF for now isn’t letting the cab cars lead.

I agree it’s definitely a distraction and frustrating that the state has spent over 210M on trainsets and is going to delay any future fleet procurements until after they see how they work which means a early 2030s order
010
California Transit Nerd @catransitnerd.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Did I say it was the answer? I was simply stating the 2 ways the state will likely be forced to go and may want to based on what they’ve previously ordered

California Transit Nerd @catransitnerd.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Sure but we’d have to wire up a massive part of our network and to do that right we’d want to first do any grade separations, bridge replacements and planned track upgrades which means we probably wouldn’t get tracks under wires for 7-10 years. And we can’t wait that long with the existing fleet

Nothing firm even as they hit 35.

The state also is in a real tough spot with rolling stock. Unless we order a massive new fleet of coaches we are in a weird limbo spot. The state likely doesn't want to procure diesel based bi or tri mode trainsets while hydrogen ones are going to be insanely expensive to operate

Yes to start both SJ-SLO and SJ-Salinas they are going to start with 1RT. SJ-Salinas should also have several peak direction caltrain trips as well resulting in half hour service to San Jose in the peak direction.

Update on Caltrain/Capital Corridor to Salinas along with a central coast service from the September CRCC meeting. Looks like 1RT of Capital Corridor is planned for 27 or early 28

Yep I was making a joke and I think some of the odd service patterns at the VTA/Samtrans overlap are probably worse than Samtrans/Muni Muni is also more deeply embedded into the city/county unlike VTA

California Transit Nerd @catransitnerd.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Sorry best we can do is have VTA take over. Muni would be too good for San Mateo county. BART does need to eat Caltrain.

phase 2 hasn't started CEQA yet and I won't be surprised if we end up adding onto the system even after phase 2 is done.

We don’t need to put everything at SFO. Oaklands going to be a ghost town after LA, SD, Vegas all get replaced with high speed rail.

No membership-based YIMBY group in California is supporting Prop 45. The campaign also has zero transit org supporters. Much to consider

Caltrain ridership continues to grow thanks to enhanced off-peak service due to electrification. Meanwhile Metrolink ridership has stagnated due to service cuts caused by mechanical problems with their diesel trains. #ElectrifyMetrolink

Why did a High-Speed Rail Authority board member carve CAHSR out of Prop 45 (on the ballot in November), which streamlines a variety of more harmful projects from CEQA?
The law has long helped stave off problems for communities, wild spaces and ecosystems and, as such, has been praised for enhancing California's natural landscapes and quality of life. But CEQA is also blamed for obstructing needed work, and critics have no shortage of examples of when the regulation has brought seemingly endless delays and frivolous lawsuits.
"It's egregious to suggest we need housing proposals to go on for 19 years and we need a decade of public comments " said Jason Elliott, a longtime policy guru and onetime advisor to Gov. Gavin Newsom. Elliott helped write Proposition 45.

i still think the national park service should be running buses in more parks. for two reasons: reducing the number of vehicles that run on busy park roads thru delicate ecosystems is good this would make lesser-visited parks like north cascades, voyageurs, and congaree more accessible

it feels insane taking a train along an industrial corridor by massive new warehouses that dont actually connect to the rail line and instead have 100 trucks loading

It’s absolutely not necessary and only going to burden more people with super commutes which is a VMT and GHG explosion There’s so much existing urban land we can redevelop and densify there’s no reason to do greenfield sprawl.

VTA themselves completely tossed out all their own speciality consultants recommendations when it came to lower tunnel costs. I’m aware BART needs to lose up on cross passage requirements

Can VTA learn from this for BART SV2 stations absolutely will they? Absolutely not because they are captured by local businesses interests

I listened to YIMBY Action’s debate on Prop 45 last night. I was struck by how the Yes side advanced absurd, frivolous and obviously wrong interpretation of 45 but also AB 130 with respect to infill, transportation and data centers.

There are over 1,800 conflicts with PG&E and other utilities which has slowed down the project on the 119 mile spine. These conflicts add years in delay and billions in cost -- both hard costs and from delays. And that will continue until the governor and state legislature do something about it

We have studied from 2005 back when Caltrans had a rail department in charge of the corridor and they recognized they were going to need a bypass sooner than later Arguably the 3 week 2021 and nearly year in 2022 should have kicked the realignment into high gear with a 2030 Goal

BNSF is working very deeply with the state on LA/San Bernardino to San Diego Could we run steeper sure but above a certain amount of grades it becomes not traction going up but the braking force going down which will then limit speeds Making this a new higher ruling grade would not be taken lightly

California Transit Nerd @catransitnerd.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
We need to keep grades down. Likely under 2% as this route has both pax and freight

It was one of those where we know the outcome we want so justify it DB did a nearly identical study for UTA Front Runner and came up with electrification or battery+ electrification

California Transit Nerd @catransitnerd.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
He doesn’t care at all about transit and has repeatedly cut funding including with the latest changes to CARBs cap and invest. He pays lip service to expanding transit and modal shift from cars while refusing to control Caltrans who keeps trying to find loopholes in state laws or cut expansion money

California Transit Nerd @catransitnerd.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
There’s been a lot of pushback against that “study” and the latest state rail plan rightfully calls for major sections of the network to be electrified.

Hydrogen isn’t a substitute for electrification especially on a railway where it’s proven and relatively simple There’s also the issue of ventilation and if the system could keep the air below the lower explosive limit if there was a major leak on a train.
