It’s going to be closely followed by the 4 car KISS BEMU for Caltrain. Delivery is expected in 2029

Got plenty of weird and wacky lines in here. This doesn’t have Sacramento northern included as I think this is a 1920 map rather than a 1930s era

Update on Caltrain/Capital Corridor to Salinas along with a central coast service from the September CRCC meeting. Looks like 1RT of Capital Corridor is planned for 27 or early 28

1936 and 1940 SP timetable has the Siskiyou route at 23-25 hours between Portland and Oakland. 1940 SP timetable has Portland to Ashland at 12.5-14 Hours So yeah that doesn't compare favorably to the 18-18.5 hours it is right now on the Coast Starlight.

I’ve got some bypasses mapped out in part to help curves and also to cut off all the steeper than 2.2% grades near the middle. The northern is a straight up 5-7 mile base tunnel which is 1000% going to require this line to be electric

Yes and it’s plate H that forces them to be under 10ft wide Special wide loads and or crews shoving is a popular reason to force more clearance. I don’t know CSA design standards but here is BNSF verses what states they operate in require

Got to grab the classic Roger Puta photos Scare every type of conserative US railroader with EMUs and freight ran under wires with electric locos. All in the northeast including some express freight and or baggage at the head end of a passenger train.

That’s what happens when you buy BYD junk. Everyone in the NA market has decided they are bad Here’s AC transits data from a few years ago. They aren’t new to hydrogen with over 20 years of trying to make it work

Washington states own regs require 22.5ft and have for almost 60 years
110
California Transit Nerd @catransitnerd.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
This isn’t exactly a new standard and Washington’s own regs say it must be 22.5ft vs BNSF standard of 23.5ft

California Transit Nerd @catransitnerd.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
Something like half the state have minimum loading gauge standards already This is from BNSF a few years back when u was looking at updating CPUC GO-26D for 24in level boarding

If you’re going to pick a diesel at least have it be a nice looking one in a cool setting like Surfliner approaching Camarillo westbound and eastbound respectively.

AC transits union got a very generous no show policy. Be curious to know how this compares to Muni

Yes. ~450 out of 650 will be hydrogen It’s an insane plan they set in 2022 The 5th progress report should be out shortly. It’s usually a summer document

I was talking about this leg which I know has 25-30ft of vertical distance and likely would be particularly useful normally Purple might also be another option for freight but it’s definitely not going to be fast or high capacity to crawl along at restricted though this whole complex of yards

California Transit Nerd @catransitnerd.bsky.social · 09/08/2026
The state required it not MTC Much of the they got worse is really clipper 2 and cubic being bad rather than anything wrong with the gates themselves It wasn't insane, they were life expired and the full height gate is the way to go, they weren't going to do this system wide

California Transit Nerd @catransitnerd.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
CAHSR design standards: It’s also required DB to be incredibly specific on its trainset requirements and only a specific classes of trains are qualified to do that

Fare rates were in most cases regulated by the state governments. Nickel fares were standard until the late 20s or 30s on many systems This is a fictional fare increase chart but follows on average what happened in California across major operators

This is their road design for arterials there’s still 2-3 travel lanes in each direction. Putting in several rows of planted medians to try and hide the car dependency is definitely peak urban form
160
California Transit Nerd @catransitnerd.bsky.social · 31/07/2026
“Great urbanism” with major parking structures on most blocks, streets that are wider than they should be and a transit plan that’s got as much detail as a child’s marker drawing over an old map
160
California Transit Nerd @catransitnerd.bsky.social · 31/07/2026
This is their parking structure plan. You would not be seeing this level if the goal was transit and active mobility first
150
California Transit Nerd @catransitnerd.bsky.social · 31/07/2026
There’s so much wrong with it when you dig below the surface. It’s still fundamentally a car dependent suburban development with highway expansion, large roads, massive parking structures and vague transit plans

California Transit Nerd @catransitnerd.bsky.social · 24/07/2026
120 service hours a day would be a little short for San Mateo bridge. I’d probably assume ~150 as a baseline For a combined DBx and U I’d probably assume 500 service hours So we need~25m in ops where we’ve got 4 and 25% of that is farebox
000
California Transit Nerd @catransitnerd.bsky.social · 24/07/2026
Deeply frustrating to see the Dumbarton rail bridge every day knowing there’s no political interest to get passenger rail service running or even improve the existing bus significantly Buses at peak times are running with 30+ people but only come every 30-35 mins

I think this vision plan needs to go significantly further. Half hourly Sac to San Jose should be the baseline at 110mph with level boarding is an absolute must

Sen Blakespear rightfully wanted an open process which would give other agencies a change to run the org. OCTA and LA metro have failed to deliver projects. Sierra Siding and Raymer to Bernson Double track respectively are on hold to appease local NIMBYs both of which were suppose to be done already

I do find it funny whenever someone says that California Regional and intercity rail JPAs have a history of success. I don't think I'd classify the inability to deliver capital projects and infighting between member agencies as good. We need to get away from JPAs for regional and intercity rail

The new signaling system won’t be online until the early 2030s in stages

California Transit Nerd @catransitnerd.bsky.social · 06/07/2026
I'm use to OCTA saying crazy things but this tops the chart. 'Maintain railroad operations within the existing railroad right of way for the next 30 years. The state will study a potential rail relocation.' We need to get this rail line moved by 2035 not 2060s, time to move rail back to the state

Yes across California agencies have found that NFI hydrogen and BEB units are not reliable

California Transit Nerd @catransitnerd.bsky.social · 22/06/2026
MTC this is not it. Adding 231 new lane miles of HOT lanes isn't going to get us closer to our goal and you admit it maybe an issue but quickly move on We know we aren't on track to hit 20% VMT per capita reduction by 2035 required under SB743 2013

I'm not sure you could pick a site in an urban area that further away from sensitive sites. its ~3k ft away and backed up to a highway already North of the freeway is also a brand new 49MW DC with a 58MW genset farm (The genset farms are slightly oversized for redundancy & max vs continuous rating)

Landscaping using almost as much water as the selective evaporative cooling system to me means more native low water usage plant choices are required.

A few more in this case from Canada on the Deux-Montagnes line which had its Mount Royal Tunnel be taken over by REM.

This timeline is infuriating. We can’t wait 5+ years to have an RFP out for a new fleet and being waiting over a decade for new rolling stock We need major amounts of rolling stock starting to enter service in the early 2030s so we can massive increase intercity rail service by 2035

I’ve long been doubtful of Dreamstar from the questionable renders and lack of railroad background to their lack of any concrete evidence and this another to add to the list. The state needs to start running a sleeper service itself (From a petition around CAHSR from a YT creator)

California Transit Nerd @catransitnerd.bsky.social · 06/06/2026
There’s really no reason to kick them off the line. I think a shortline would be willing to work under more constraints but the peninsula alone isn’t enough to make any interested UP is quite often rolling though Palo Alto station northbound around 5-6pm

This was submitted back in 2024. I expect this extra revenue would allow us to increase and add new rail & bus services while also allowing us to avoid moving to dynamic pricing which is being considered by at least LOSSAN

It will be wired up as part of CAHSR although the bay area itself will likely pay for it rather than the state to advance the project sooner By 2034 at least bi hourly and 2040 hourly because a direct Santa Cruz to Monterey train took the other slot though Elkhorn Slough. Single track wetlands

Caltrains version (because they have a demo unit they ordered several years ago) is specifically reusing the car design from their EMUs for all 3 of the pax cars
