Does my Speak-n-Spell feel pain when I type O-U-C-H? The jury is out. Philosophers and neuroscientists say that's fucking stupid, but I called a guy from the Center for Pretending that Household Electronics Are Sentient and he said there's no way to know for sure.

being so fr when I say that transmisogyny has put feminism back like 50 years

what i thought we had distanced ourselves from was the reduction of women to vaginas and wombs and the ability to bear children. i thought we had progressed past 'dresses are for women and pants are for men. i thought we progressed past the idea that someone is less of a woman if she does not adhere strictly to beauty standards. i thought we progressed past the idea that naturally being comfortable adhering to highly feminine standards is vulgar. but i (sarcastically) guess no one could have predicted that trans-exclusive feminism would be the downfall of all the progress we've made

I fear you may be right. It has a vague whiff of the early 2000s, when I felt ok about making fun of silliness because I believed things might get better.

I'm probably a dinosaur, but I wish students were allowed more time just to be students: to study, to read, to think, to talk to each other, to have big ideas - maybe even to have fun now & then. I'm not convinced turning unis into training centres is going to fix bigger problems in the jobs market

There is not one part of life in the UK not touched by the legacies of the slave trade. Both my parents benefitted from the Dick Bequest as they studied to be teachers in NE Scotland, and thought of it as a 'nice' thing. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_D...

I think I may have taken "The Bronze Age remains the cable went close to were mentioned in Pembrokeshire council planning documents, external about the power link." and made it into a bigger thing than it actually was. I do maintain though that real world celebration of fiction should be harmless.

I think you're right - it's fine in principle. The problem starts when preserving the memorial to popular fiction carries other costs, such as jeopardising a real grave site. It seems unbalanced that the (potentially brief) passion for Dobby should imperil a real person's actual grave.

Similar pattern with Jacqueline Wilson (children) and Jodi Picoult (adults) - if that was the voice you liked, that was the voice you liked and you would accept no substitute. As an educator, I could never quite work out what to do about it.
