Pleased to have solved this one: #OnePlaceWednesday Eliza Steer was a nurse on the Woodlark 1874 - she witnessed a codicil to the will of Elizabeth Sewell in Romford, Essex 1876. That's Elizabeth Sewell, the wife of NZ's first premier, Henry Sewell, who left NZ on the Howrah 1875 with unnamed nurse.

Y-DNA tested my paternal cousin back in 2024, then target tested a potential half 4C1R, upgraded to Y-700. I now have the result I wanted: Abraham Maginnis b abt 1786 was most likely the father of my GG-Grandfather, Wm Thompson. #GenHour Stoked as initial Y-111 results were genetic distance of 6.
This date is an estimate based on genetic information only. With a 95% probability, the most recent common ancestor of all members of haplogroup I-FTH30442 was born between the years 1445 and 1870 CE. The most likely estimate is around 1704 CE, rounded to 1700 CE.

Better late than never - the books I enjoyed most in 2025.
catherineclarkeauthor.wordpress.com
Best Books 2025
I’m a bit late with my top ten books for 2025 but here they are. I read 61 books in total, less fiction (35) and about the same amount of non-fiction (25) as previous years, plus one collection of short stories. As usual historical fiction, history or memoirs were the genres I favoured. The books were sourced in equal proportions from my wonderful local bookstore (Schrodingers), Hutt City Libraries (shout out to their fab free reservation service) and second-hand book fair purchases.

Book Review: Wonderland by Tracy Farr
Tracy Farr’s alternative history, Wonderland, is a fabulous read. The setting is real – Wonderland was an amusement park in Miramar that ran from 1907 to 1912 – but the main characters and events are fictional. The amusement park is the backdrop to the lives of the Loverock family. Charlie is the owner and his wife Matti, a doctor in obstetrics, is promoting the new technology of incubators for newborn babies.
