What can a one-voyage study reveal about our ancestors? I’ll explore it in “Drunken, dissipated and immoral? The Woodlark Passengers 1874” at #AATP2026 on Day 7 #ChangingPlaces, 13 October 2026. Recording online until 31 Oct. sog.org.uk/welcome-to-a... #Genealogy #FamilyHistory #MigrationHistory

Probably happened more than we realise. I’ve found a few examples that the officials found out about in Archives but there must have been others that weren’t discovered.

I think the address refers to the immigration agent rather than the passenger. Look like Mary Mulholland married John Mowbray, a confectioner in Dunedin 1883. She died 1919, probate says born at Eden, Co Derry. Distracting rabbit-holes ahead...

It’s an unindexed file at Archives NZ from a rather grumpy immigration officer in Dunedin. The Irish agents would substitute unvetted people for immigrants that cancelled.

It’s already a lottery if a record will be available in 2 days, a week or try again in a month because the move from the old building is still not complete a year later.

Pleased to have solved this one: #OnePlaceWednesday Eliza Steer was a nurse on the Woodlark 1874 - she witnessed a codicil to the will of Elizabeth Sewell in Romford, Essex 1876. That's Elizabeth Sewell, the wife of NZ's first premier, Henry Sewell, who left NZ on the Howrah 1875 with unnamed nurse.

It's worth putting in a request to the Police Museum in Porirua about the photo as they have some not at Archives. I've had success with a couple of Woodlark passengers when the PG records a photo taken. app.weare.xyz/public/the-w...

I discovered the 1727 will of my 7xGGF, Henry Asikell in the PCY wills, then in the York Cause Papers a previous 1722 will. The daughters had been disinherited by their brother in the later will & son steadied the hand of his father, he 'being a little troubled with the palsie'! #GenHour

Y-DNA tested my paternal cousin back in 2024, then target tested a potential half 4C1R, upgraded to Y-700. I now have the result I wanted: Abraham Maginnis b abt 1786 was most likely the father of my GG-Grandfather, Wm Thompson. #GenHour Stoked as initial Y-111 results were genetic distance of 6.
This date is an estimate based on genetic information only. With a 95% probability, the most recent common ancestor of all members of haplogroup I-FTH30442 was born between the years 1445 and 1870 CE. The most likely estimate is around 1704 CE, rounded to 1700 CE.
