I've been cleaning out my office and attic today. Filled up five trash bags containing 14 years of conference and MVP swag that used to mean a lot to me, that I'm now ready to part with. The memories will always stay with me even if I don't keep the buttons and stickers and pens from 2015 😄

That last sentence is crucial. Many are leaving because the craft of building good solutions has turned into management and review roles, and it's burning us out quickly. Those who are left are those who never dug into the details to begin with. (Also generalizing.)

The image is of a four panel comic.
In the first panel we see Sarah, the protagonist, next to a stick figure labeled “AI”. The stick figure says, “my outputs look just like yours now.”
The second panel zooms in on Sarah’s face. Above her we see text reading “I think”.
The third panel zooms in closer on Sarah’s face. Text above her reads “you missed”.
The fourth panel shows Sarah drawing happily in a sunlit room. The text above her reads “the point”.

Apparently someone from Microsoft told my client that Azure integration services is the best practice way of ingesting data into Fabric. My client is now confused why we're using things like mirroring and notebooks instead. ...I'm looking forward to the meeting with that Microsoft employee 🙃

So I opened the can on a regular Monday. (They were way better than I thought!) But it reminded me to maybe not save everything for the right time? Maybe I can make regular days better by choosing to make them "special". Wear the dress. Enjoy the dessert first. Watch the movie. Eat the sardines.

Today, I found a box of sardines I've saved for probably close to ten years. Sardines. Canned. Because it was from Portugal in a pretty, pink box with nice branding. I've saved a box of sardines for "the right occasion". Meaning it has been sitting hidden in a cabinet for ten years.

I'm the kind of person who saves everything until a special occasion or until I've "deserved" it. Pretty dress? Save it for a party. Dessert? Only after I've finished dinner. A good movie? Definitely for an evening I can properly enjoy it. Today, I found something that made me rethink my choices.

They took memory cards and sold us cloud storage. They took CDs and DVDs and sold us streaming. They took software you bought once and turned it into a monthly subscription. Corporate America figured out the real money wasn’t in selling you something. It was making sure you NEVER actually own it.

I'm a hypocrite. Personally, I detest (gen) AI. I despise big tech for monetizing human creativity, contributions, connections and communities, then renting it back to us. At work, though? I have three licenses and use them every day to be able to keep up with tasks. I hate it.

If you "support the community" by frequently positioning yourself on the center stage in the spotlight while the community are your "guests" or "participants", you're not the good person you think you are.

The number of apologists in this thread is insane… It’s simple, don’t market your product as limitless when there are clear limits (yes I was in the Synapse Analytics trenches). Be clear about your ability to provide your services and people will understand. Limit at creation time and people won’t…

You’ve gotta use AI because it’s the future. But also it’ll take your job. But also it’ll create a paradise on earth and solve most of our problems. But also it’ll end humanity soon. But also you’ll get left behind if you don’t use it right now.

Microsoft is very much part of the problem hyping up AI, and customers are paying for it, literally and figuratively.

This is the cloud provider many of us have trusted with our business-critical infrastructure, systems and applications. Now they cannot manage their own infrastructure. They are shoving the responsibility and consequences over on their customers instead. And we're not publicly enraged!? 👀

Life is good ❤️ I'm spending less time on social media, more time with my two- and four-legged loves. I'm enjoying gaming again, often laughing uncontrollably. I'm finally working to live instead of living for work. If a slower, more meaningful life is the millennial midlife crisis, I'll embrace it.

Microsoft has gone full obnoxious with "Upgrade your plan" in Office. The button doesn't go away and will drown out everything else in Word, including the name of the file you're editing. If you needed evidence MSFT is panicked over retail Copilot sales, this is pretty compelling evidence.
