It is very unfortunate that the US will no longer have any reliable federal statistics until Trump is gone. Even the best private job statistics, ADP, tends to be far off from the more comprehensive Bureau of Labor Statistics numbers. These statistics cannot be privatized.

We’ve all been in meetings like this on.ft.com/3GS1Ykp
On the eve of the proposal, von der Leyen's own budget commissioner Piotr Serafin, who is tasked with selling the significantly enlarged budget to EU capitals, had "no clue" of the complex formula that would determine how much each country would receive, according to a person involved in the discussions.
Despite other commissioners making pleas for advanced notice of the budget breakdown, they were only given final figures of their funding in the minutes before a meeting scheduled to sign it off.
That meeting started four hours later than scheduled.

Turns out there is first mover advantage if you are a university nearly going bust www.researchprofessionalnews.com/rr-news-uk-u...
The £22 million bailout given to the University of Dundee leaves a "completely irrelevant" amount of emergency funding in the pot from which the rest of Scotland's universities can draw, a former university principal has said.
The Scottish Funding Council announced on 20
March that it had approved a £22m support package for Dundee, comprising a mix of low-cost loans and capital grant funding. The money has been drawn from a £25m pot provided by the Scottish government, meaning just £3m, or 12 per cent, remains to be allocated. There are
19 universities in Scotland.

Love this quote by Jacob Bronowski about the idealised view of the scholar. Then I think about Elon Musk, FRS
"... they do not make wild claims, they do not cheat, they do not try to persuade at any cost, they appeal neither to prejudice nor to authority, they are often frank about their ignorance, their disputes are fairly decorous, they do not confuse what is being argued with race, politics, sex or age, they listen patiently to the young and to the old who both know everything. These are the general virtues of scholarship, and they are particularly the virtues of science".
