Monday morning dog
Happy wire fox terrier dog scampering across a sandy beach on a grey September day. She is running in front of the sea defences that thin off into the distance and are reflected in the returning tide.

Probably twice a year I listen to the acoustic version of Shallow Bed by Dry the River and have a quiet transcendental experience.

Absolutely superb conditions today for saying ‘it doesn’t feel like a Tuesday.’ Say it early, say it often and just have fun with it. It’s a small talk goldmine and you’d be a fool not to get involved.

More importantly, I was beach body ready (I'd eaten a family pack of butter flavoured crisps) and the sun has given me cute freckles (skin damage).

One by one people turned to stop and stare. It was a spectacle. A handful packed up and left. Walking between the folks who remained face down in the sand, enjoying the heat on their backs. Many walked back into the sea unbothered.

Stood in the sea watching a giant smoke plume rise from the woods above the buildings. Ash began to rain down on the crowded beach and the air turned acrid.

I would also argue that while money spent should be measured, it should not be the sole measurement of value. The impact of accessible and usable digital public services goes way beyond money.

I think that part of the problem is that GDS unlocks value for other govt departments rather than being able to articulate its own value in a way that the big decision makers can measure.

Brian Case died this week. @petepaphides.bsky.social has written the most beautiful appreciation of his work as a jazz writer. It’s wonderful. And this extract is just as profound about why music writers write about music as it is about jazz.
