On this, Mohandas Gandhi's birthday, may we all remember that caste supremacy and patriarchy cannot save us from white supremacy. The only way out is solidarity.

Susan Sontag's 9/16/01 piece in The New Yorker got her crucified but it's one of the few things from that era that aged well. "'Our country is strong,' we are told again and again. I for one don’t find this entirely consoling. Who doubts that America is strong? But that’s not all America has to be."
The disconnect between last Tuesday’s monstrous dose of reality and the self-righteous drivel and outright deceptions being peddled by public figures and TV commentators is startling, depressing. The voices licensed to follow the event seem to have joined together in a campaign to infantilize the public. Where is the acknowledgment that this was not a “cowardly” attack on “civilization” or “liberty” or “humanity” or “the free world” but an attack on the world’s self-proclaimed superpower, undertaken as a consequence of specific American alliances and actions? How many citizens are aware of the ongoing American bombing of Iraq? And if the word “cowardly” is to be used, it might be more aptly applied to those who kill from beyond the range of retaliation, high in the sky, than to those willing to die themselves in order to kill others. In the matter of courage (a morally neutral virtue): whatever may be said of the perpetrators of Tuesday’s slaughter, they were not cowards. Our leaders are bent on convincing us that everything is O.K. America is not afraid. Our spirit is unbroken, although this was a day that will live in infamy and America is now at war. But everything is not O.K. And this was not Pearl Harbor. We have a robotic President who assures us that America still stands tall. A wide spectrum of public figures, in and out of office, who are strongly opposed to the policies being pursued abroad by this Administration apparently feel free to say nothing more than that they stand united behind President Bush. A lot of thinking needs to be done, and perhaps is being done in Washington and elsewhere, about the ineptitude of American intelligence and counter-intelligence, about options available to American foreign policy, particularly in the Middle East, and about what constitutes a smart program of military defense. But the public is not being asked to bear much of the burden of reality. The unanimously applauded, self-congratulatory bromides of a Soviet Party Congress seemed contemptible. The unanimity of the sanctimonious, reality-concealing rhetoric spouted by American officials and media commentators in recent days seems, well, unworthy of a mature democracy.

Those in public office have let us know that they consider their task to be a manipulative one: confidence-building and grief management. Politics, the politics of a democracy—which entails disagreement, which promotes candor—has been replaced by psychotherapy. Let’s by all means grieve together. But let’s not be stupid together. A few shreds of historical awareness might help us understand what has just happened, and what may continue to happen. “Our country is strong,” we are told again and again. I for one don’t find this entirely consoling. Who doubts that America is strong? But that’s not all America has to be.

Consistent and principled refusal to vote for people credibly accused of rape is worth doing even if it means we lose some elections. Handing power to rapists will always be worse for our movement in the long run. Excusing sexual violence is never strategic in our struggle for liberation.

People keep acting like the fascists care about "crime." THEY DO NOT. They care about domination & fear. They will fearmonger re: "crimes" committed by out groups while cheering on the "crimes" committed by "their people" Meanwhile liberals keep bleating on about hypocrisy when hierarchy matters.

"Special Interest" is also a fun rhetorical trick of asserting that "voters who want racial justice" and "a representative of the paper mill industry" are morally equivalents to provide service of office to.

it is frustrating to see calls for a general strike when people having no understanding that there isn’t a lot of power in that if people don’t belong to some sort of organizing home. you need a way for people to have collective power for more than a day.

A graph showing mortality rates over time from Our World In Data. It's titled The long run history of child mortality. It shows roughly stable child mortality ("children who died before reaching the end of puberty...generally around 15 years") up until the early 20th century, where it plummers down to the single digits.

I’m a trans woman in my forties. Growing up without social media—and during Section 28—I knew nothing about transness and I knew no-one like me. I almost didn’t make it; I dread to think how many didn’t. You can’t tell me that returning to this state is not an intended effect of this proposed ban.

We don’t have to continue to allow this. Just last night I almost got doored on a residential street. I honestly don’t know how many almost doorings I’ve had. Feeling really fucked up about motorist can’t even be a little better the day after someone dies. It being like this is a policy choice.

To our dismay, the artist and author Marjane Satrapi has passed away. As she wrote, ordinary Americans and Iranians have more in common with each other than we do with either of our governments, which have far too much in common with each other. We honor her memory and oppose the war.

NO WAR WITH IRAN!
The world is not divided into countries. The world is not divided between East and West.
You are American, I am Iranian, we don’t know each other, but we talk together
& we understand each other perfectly. The difference between you
& your government is much bigger than the difference
between you & me.
And the difference between me
& my government is much bigger
than the difference
between me & you.
And our governments are very much the same...
—Marjane Satrapi
