For those interested in seeing an authentic Hieronymus Bosch: go for his drawings! Rather recently discovered is INFERNAL LANDSCAPE (25.9x19.7cm Private Collection, n/a). With well-known elements as the human clappers, and new inventions like a dragon vomiting human bodies or a helmeted bird skull…

I agree wholly with the BCRP that this is a pure Bosch work.
It shows his way of fast AND detailed sketching. He uses pretty much the same for making underdrawing of paintings.

I am glad that on Lucas van Leyden‘s Last Judgment (1526, at the Lakenhal museum, Leiden) at least some demons CHECK the lists before burning poor souls. (Own photo). On the Bosch’ Afterlife (inset, ~1500), a different demon is just absorbed READING a book… but which? At the Prado museum, Madrid.

Prof.Dr.Vandenbroeck’s explanation of Bosch’ Garden as a medieval Grail is attractive: *allusions of an earthly & heavenly paradise *where the souls live until the Last Judgment *in a mixed state of paradise and sin. Physical desires, esp. sexual ones, are effortlessly fulfilled.

WHY IS A ROOSTER one of the Arma Christi, Passion items? The trifold COCK-CROW indicated Peter’s Denial of Christ after his arrest, as described by all apostles. Master Gerard van Honthorst made it part of a bar genre painting in which soldiers were playing cards… Which gave him room for 2 candles!

TOP RIGHT, Hieronymus Bosch’ Calvary with Donor (~1490-1500) has the donor with striking STRIPED PANTS. They are not fantasy- similar pants can be found at other contemporary paintings, all at the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam (1500; 1520). The Bosch is at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium/Brussels

It seems that striped pants were worn by high ranking figures, even rulers. One of the paintings is the Tree of Jesse.
It certainly makes a dazzling sight!

THE TEMPTATION OF ST.ANTHONY can be found also at the Prado, in a quite different version. The museum attributes it to Bosch 1510-15, on several characteristics. The Bosch Conservation and Research Project was not yet given permission to document or examine the painting in situ.

THE GENERAL MEANING of Bosch’s work The Temptation of St.Anthony of 1500 is simple. Acc. to pop.legends, Satan was envious of the recluse. He tried to break him in various ways. Like apparitions in the air, including war scenes. Often the ways of Satan are specifically directed at Anthony’s person.

How the flying demonic war “ships” specifically relate to Anthony, is a subject for further study.
Anyway, they are quite frightening.

The other war scenes may have been inspired by actual skirmishes (Dutch word “schermutselingen”!) and battles that happened in Bosch’s time.

There’s no doubt in my mind that this is St.Peter in a red robe at the Gate leading to Heaven. It’s one of the arguments that this wing of Bosch’ Garden triptych should NOT be named “Hell” but rather <Afterlife> or <Hereafter>, in my opinion! 2nd collage: Compare Memling detail; and a fresco

About the Escorial version:
Patiently Christ undergoes the scourging doled out by the executioner behind him and bears the nail blocks that hamper and cut his feet. Simon of Cyrene, the man in white behind him, tries to alleviate his suffering, as described in the Bible. In the background, the disciple John, wearing red, comforts Mary.

About the KHM version:
In the foreground are the two murderers who were executed with Jesus—the one repented before dying; the other did not.

THIS HOLY WEEK/4 climaxing with the commemoration of the Last Supper on Maundy Thursday(Holy Thursday). No Hieronymus Bosch painting of this scene is known. But on the collage are quite some semi-hidden, mostly Passion related Christian symbology details from Prado’s Love Garden panel. See ALT>

*Glorious entry of Jerusalem by Christ on a donkey
*Blood coral: linked to His blood
*Butterfly: caterpillar turns butterfly, symbol of resurrection

ANIMAL TROTTER (Bosch’s Anthony work) is part of metaphors linking wine & food (Gluttony) to licentious merrymaking & love-making (Lust: luring Devil-Queen). On Bosch’ depictions such tables looks scarce but it’s just the idea of a banquet. Depending on its thickness a trotter could hint at poverty.

Bosch’s “Hell” wing has many hidden Passion Items: 13. THE TORCH was like the Lantern (post #1), carried in the night mob that came to arrest Jesus at the Mount of Olives. Bosch again hides the article here. He placed it in the hands of a demon which accompanies a soul on Tree-Man’s head cover.

A KILLER/FIGHTING HARE was depicted in marginalia, specif. drolleries, funny side illustrations of manuscripts. A Dutch expression describes the Upside Down World: “The hunters catch the hares, and the hares catch the hunters.” Undated, Harrebomée v1 Bosch used a very similar image, see far right.

Since Pride is greatest of capital sins, then Humility is the greatest virtue. Painter Hieronymus Bosch seems to have painted himself as a rather poor, laughable, wounded figure. He cannot move his legs, he has turned partly into dry wood. His egg shell torso holds a Bad Inn, w.lowly bagpipes music

Although Hieronymus Bosch restrained himself, Love Garden can be seen as a Cockaigne of "sinful life”. Its likely donor Engelbrecht is known to have led a more than debauched life. In the <Golden Fleece> he was blamed 3X for his dissolute lifestyle. He was one of the first to die of syphilis…

Typical AMBIGUOUS SCENE by late medieval/early Renaissance Hieronymus Bosch: a peaceful farm where people don’t notice what’s going on at the Anthony chapel- Except possibly a man who was collecting acorns on an Oak tree, when he saw the fire 🔥 and climbed up higher to see better what is happening.

RED FRUIT Dr. De Bruyn: In Bosch art, hollow fruit skins never mean much good. According to Bax it’s Mandrake. I added a copy from Brussels beneath the Lisbon original, and a part of John Baptist from Museo Lázaro Galdiano. Mandragora was used as anaestetic, and linked to fertility. /+ALT FOR MORE

Mandrake was advised to soothe heavy fever (~1270) and the pain of St.Anthony’s fire (1527), in Antonite monasteries.
It could induce ‘madness’ (1554). With its relevance for fertility, it also had an ‘erotic’ reputation, Genesis. 30:14-24; Song of Songs 7:13, Figuratively.
Here with Bosch it may link to love. Mandrake is still known as the “love apple”. Even linking to Eve and Adam.
And finally, mandrake is mentioned as one of the ingredients for flying ointment for witches.

SAINT HIERONYMUS (JEROME) was painter Bosch’s name-giver. *At LEFT as painted by Hieronymus Bosch himself. At the MSK Ghent. *At RIGHT as part of a triptych by the Bosch Studio. At the MSK Ghent/Groeningemuseum. Notice the similar somewhat hidden animal skulls. ~1500AD.

The studio triptych contains quite some details known from other works by Bosch.

The INFERNAL LANDSCAPE drawing by Hieronymus Bosch was only recently authenticated as an autograph Bosch work in 2014, by the BRCP. A juggernaut monster swallows souls drawn in with a net by the wheel in its trap. With boschian elements s.a. human clappers, feet in jugs, huge knife, giant lamp.

Dr.L.Scholten (2024) discusses the work shop(s) of the Van Akens including Bosch. A strong argument for B having an own studio is that Markt 61 of Bosch’s wife is much larger than the family house/shop Markt 29: it has almost 6x more space! Even without proof, it could easily harbor Bosch’s studio!

In search for scenes fit for Purgatory/Hell on the Last Judgement/Wien of ~1500, Bosch Studio may have encountered a 1496 woodcut by Dürer. Compare how in the background prisoners are being thrown down against rocks and THORNY BUSHES. Dürer painted an other version in 1508.

The woodcut is about the 10,000 martyrs, a popular subject at that time.

Bosch & Studio’s Last Judgment is in the KHM museum in Vienna.

VERONICA’S LEGEND started ~13c: During His carrying of the cross, Veronica gave Christ a sweat cloth. The depiction of His face impression became popular. Hieronymus Bosch & Studio painted it several times. Bosch Followers used it too. “Veronica” is explained as <vera icon> = the real depiction.

BOSCH’S VISIONS OF THE HEREAFTER~1500 are 4 panels of a further lost polyptych, likely a Last Judgment. The heavenly assumption of redeemed is linked to literature about cleansing spheres of souls. Here part of the panel + the tunnel center underpainting. Imo it shows also a Near Death Experience

TREE-MEN & OTHERS WITH BRANCHES can be found several times in Hieronymus Bosch’ oeuvre of ca.1500AD. *They are all demonic *16c Rhetoricians called sinners “barren trees” and “withered branches” *it has a link to biblical passages like Luke 23:31 etc.
