The difference between this Last Judgment by the Bosch Studio, and the Afterlife panel of Bosch’s Garden triptych may be the level of coherence. Here several striking scenes are hard to connect, except that they are sin-related. The Garden’s Hereafter is also about sins, but tells more stories…

I didn’t find a reason yet why the APPLE-KING looks like a statue. Is he dead? Smart move by Bosch, to keep us wondering… The figure may stand for King Herodes, in pursue of the new coming King of the World. He died indeed very soon, January–April 1 BCE (Steinmann) or March–April 4 BCE (Schürer).

The strange little old fellow with walking support at RIGHT is a direct attempt to gaslight pious Anthony. To make him doubt himself: is he seeing things, is it dementia - is he becoming like a child… Is he <walking with little mills> i.e. is he crazy? Or by the jug: is he drunk?

AUTHOR FISCHER EXPLAINS how Hieronymus Bosch’s St.Anthony is based on the Vitas Patrum. It mentions Satan’s effort to tempt the saint with a silver dish and then with a quantity of gold (Ch.11+12): the woman with the serpentine tail offers a silver dish to a nun; gold takes the form of a goblet.
