Keir Starmer has finally resigned. Chris Ward and Peter Kyle must go next. We deserve a general election. Now.
Today, Keir Starmer announced his resignation as Prime Minister. As a leader who has presided over crackdowns on free speech and the right to protest, complicity in genocide, endless scandals and above all, a total failure to improve the lives of ordinary people, this cannot come a moment too soon.

What should come next is simple: a General Election. A chance for Brighton & Hove to be rid not just of Starmer but lackeys like Peter Kyle and Chris Ward too. Cowardly career politicians who'd sooner stitch up selections or have their constituents arrested at 4am than stand up for our city.

Instead, it seems we're likely to get Andy Burnham - Keir Starmer with a Northern accent. Whether it's Burnham or a different Labour leader, we'll experience the same cuts. The same complicity. The same cruel 'crackdowns' on migration, LGBTQIA+ rights and so much more.

People deserve better. Brighton & Hove deserves better. A new coat of paint won't undo Labour's betrayal, and it won't fix the country. The only answer is to vote Green.

Today, Brighton & Hove Green Party has written to Katy Bourne, the Police & Crime Commissioner. We are seeking answers, accountability, and justice for the violent and extreme conduct directed at counter-protesters by police on Saturday 13th June at the Carnival Against Fascism.

Dear Katy Bourne,

We, Brighton & Hove Green Party, are writing to you in your capacity as Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner. Within your directly elected remit is a responsibility to hold the Police to account on behalf of the public.

On Saturday 13th June, many of our members witnessed and were subjected to some of the most violent policing in our city’s recent history. Thousands of Brighton and Hove residents assembled in the city centre in a display of unity against a march called by the far-right groups ‘South East Patriots’ and ‘British Imperial League’, among others.

These groups spread misinformation, conspiracy, and racial hatred particularly towards our Muslim and migrant neighbours. They encourage violence on our streets - just last week endorsing the abhorrent white supremacist riots taking place in Belfast.

Organised violence, targeting people based on ethnicity and orchestrated by agitators using scapegoating and fear to divide us. We are happy to call this what it is; fascism. Racism and hatred have no place on our streets, and we are proud that our members stood shoulder to shoulder with many thousands across our community to defend our fantastic city against the normalisation of far-right thugs marching through our neighbourhoods.

On this occasion, the police appeared to make every effort to facilitate the march. First down Surrey Street, then Terminus Road, then Trafalgar Street. While repeatedly trying to force a path for fascists, police officers used violent methods against the counter-protesters. Our members witnessed or were subject to the use of pepper spray and batons. Police officers were seen striking and kicking those taking a stand against the fascist protesters.

Our country has a long and regrettable history of police violence. From the workers’ struggle,…

Brighton and Hove Green Party statement on the Carnival Against Fascism:

On Saturday, Brighton & Hove showed what we all already knew: that our city is anti-fascist. That hate is not welcome here. Not now. Not ever.

Brighton & Hove Greens were proud to be a formal part of the Carnival Against Fascism coalition of groups that came together in advance of Saturday. We’re prouder still of the thousands who turned up and stood firm when it mattered most, bringing together all parts of our city and our struggle - the people, businesses, and communities who make Brighton & Hove what it is.

Serious questions must be asked of why the police turned their aggression on peaceful counter-protestors while repeatedly trying to force a path for fascists who were completely outnumbered. Our members saw or were subjected first hand to pepper spray, riot tactics, police violence and intimidation. The police chose to escalate rather than resolve the situation, by refusing countless opportunities to funnel the fascists back in the station and send them home.

In spite of this, Brighton & Hove stood firm once again. But the fight against fascism must be won on all fronts - not only on the streets or in elections, but with every conversation, every single day. We must stand for a better, hopeful alternative, and we'll continue to do just that - to fight for environmental, racial, economic and social justice, and to build a better world for all.

If any of our members, or members of the wider community, were affected by this violence please feel free to reach out to Brighton & Hove Green Party for support. You are not alone.

Last month, Councillor Bruno de Oliveira joined the Greens and became our 10th current councillor on Brighton and Hove City Council. Here's why:
Green poster:

Text at top: I like most of you, have a dream of a fairer society.

Large heading: It's time for change.

Picture of Bruno de Oliveira. “I joined the Green Party because I refuse a politics that tells us we live on an island of strangers. The current system enriches a few while millions struggle, then it blames the most vulnerable in society to distract from rising inequality.

Greens offer a hopeful alternative: a society built on peace, housing, and affordability. The notion of neutrality can be misleading and naive. It is time for a change; it is time for economic justice. The idea that we have to deal with the world as it is, not as we wish it were, aims to prevent us from building a fairer society.

Imagine someone telling Martin Luther King Jr to put his civil rights dreams away. A revolution starts with a mere dream of the world we want to live in, and not as it is, and I, like most of you, have a dream of a fairer society.”

Brighton & Hove Green Party statement on Reform UK Brighton and Hove's antisemitic Facebook post:
Brighton & Hove Green Party utterly condemn the antisemitic graphic of Green Party leader Zack Polanski posted on Friday by ‘Reform UK Brighton & Hove’ on their official Facebook page. There can be no question that the graphic is antisemitic: depicting Zack Polanski, only the fifth Jewish leader of a UK political party in history, using tropes and imagery that deliberately and intentionally draw upon Nazi propaganda.

The image itself is beneath contempt. Yet it is even more terrifying to reflect that for Reform UK, this is nothing new. This act of antisemitism represents only the latest demonstration of Reform’s openly racist and fascist platform. Nationally, they have been at the forefront of fuelling a rising tide of hatred, and discrimination. And on Reform UK Brighton & Hove’s Facebook, this antisemitic attack on Zack Polanski was followed yesterday by a further racist graphic declaring New York Mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani to be a terrorist.

Brighton & Hove remains a city that is anti-racist, anti-fascist and that stands firm against hatred. Two weeks ago, Brighton & Hove Greens were proud to join more than 600 people at the Stand Up to Racism Unity March. We note that this follows our own party members being subjected to explicit antisemitic abuse in the public gallery during a council meeting earlier in the month. We will continue to stand against antisemitism and racism in any form - and stand in solidarity with Zack Polanski against such abuse.
