At first glance nothing unusual about this urban street scene until you realize no motor vehicles and children playing. Our usual SE4 'In Town Without Your Car Day' event went well, lovely weather too. Tomorrow parents will have to explain why their children can't play out again.

Really disappointed that @lewisham.gov.uk haven't given permission for our crescent to hold a car free day on the 20 September. No problem over the last 15+ years and strange given we now have a @lewishamgreenparty.bsky.social administration.

Both of the canal routes across the Pennines are again closed, Rochdale since March due to bank collapse in Manchester and Huddersfield Narrow due to water shortages (almost guaranteed in July/August). The Rochdale looks in a right sorry state and unlikely to open soon.

Lovely little pub in the centre of Oldham, Fox & Pine. They also sponsor Oldham RL, important to support local teams. Winner of a Greater Manchester pub awards, impressive considering the number of other potential winners. From my quick visit Oldham town centre looks worth a repeat viewing.

A view you don't often get at Eurotunnel. Long Q for passports, just missed train. Q to load, diverted thru train to wait, which left empty, Q for over height, then diverted up ramp, along adjacent platform back to original Q. Eventually onto train. No explanation but a free bottle of water ;-)
Unusual queue location for loading onto Eurotunnel train.

Lunch at the previously dependable Gasthof De Zwaan in Lo. For some unknown reason service was incredibly slow, arrived 1235 & didn't leave till 1430 followed by a mad dash to Eurotunnel. Followed by very strange Eurotunnel delays.

Poperinge...not a particularly good photo but a nice place to visit. Personally I think they need to up their game on cafes (excluding Gast) and food choices.

One of the better beer lists of cafes we have visited in our 4 days in the area is around 300 metres from our gite. We only went on our last night... L'école Buissonnière in Godewaersvelde, France Saying that it wasn't open all the time we were here.

How times have changed.. overnight in Poperinge next Monday so thought I would order Westvleteren beer. 2x8 & 1x6 pickup 3pm Monday. Took about 3 minutes to order, not like the old days. 5 day cycling trip from 20-24 July will take some back for gite in Godewaersvelde. Research on cafes needed.

Guildford to Shoreham-on-Sea bike ride yesterday. Some impressive old canal and railway alignments on a pretty warm day. Dug out the Orange P7 MTB for the trip. More research needed for pubs but there was 14 of us so different priorities. Part of the Tweed Run Yeomanry cycle rides.

Dug out 3 aged Orvals from the back of the cupboard, bottled 2024, 2013 & 2008, all very drinkable but older 2 had lost much of any body normally associated with the beer. Stood up better than a 33cl Chimay Bleu of a similar vintage.

Guess West Northants CC thought these additions added something to the infrastructure. Yes it's as rural as it looks. Links Daventry with Braunston, phase 1 completed years ago. Good that phase 2 in detailed design says westnorthants.moderngov.co.uk/documents/s2...
