Teaching a graduate level course called theory and pedagogy in the study of writing this semester - Anyone have book or article recommendations for me? I have some old syllabi from 2012/2013 to look through, but I definitely want some updates to readings! #literacies #edusky

A2: Full transparency I’ve only had one interview, & that was for a job I applied for in December. I applied for jobs in Sept, October, & November too, & online my applications still say “in process” or “awaiting committee review” haha. So I have no idea & am looking forward to clarity! #literacies

A5: Classrooms can easily feel like “doing school” with a focus on compliance. Instead, support students to follow their intellectual passions! Give choice about what texts to read, work to produce, and questions to pursue. I’ve seen this work in diverse and inclusive public schools! #literacies

A1: Returning to Q1 real quick, but @srtoliver.bsky.social’s article about the show Luke Cage with JAAL has always stuck with me about such an interesting deep dive into a fandom and how literacy is represented in media, and the fact that she wrote it as a doc student blows my mind! #literacies

A6: Maybe investing in more choice assignments where students pick the text (widely defined) could help. Like, if I’m wanting kids to flex their research skills, I could let them choose a topic and research it related to that text (connected to critical #literacies, like interrogating power, etc.)

A5: As I’ve been teaching We Were Liars, there have been some who weren’t as into it at first as others. It made me worry that some thought they couldn’t catch up to those who had read the book or seen the show. Maybe positioning fandom in really welcoming ways can help offset dead ends? #literacies

A4: This would be really amazing to do in my classroom those last three weeks before Christmas. When we go to the library, so many of my kids have their own interests and it has so much potential for sparking conversation. I might do this for real…I’ll report back! #literacies

A3: In my 10th ELA class we just finished reading We Were Liars since so many of my students watched the show this summer (easy engagement!). We took a lot of time to unpack the racism that a character faces in the text and the commentary on class privilege throughout the book #literacies

I feel like finding those groups of people helped me to become a more critical teacher (and now scholar) because I started to see different possibilities in texts with fanfiction #literacies

A1: Censorship is an effort to take away access to information. Readings from critical #literacies theorists largely inform my definition and so does my own teaching. I’ve experienced attempts at book bans/challenges in my school, but thankfully I’ve had support from those around me to prevent it.
