I’m up before dawn for travel, which means I can bug the lunchtime UK crowd: Do I know any game nerds with interests in 18th century (1660-1835) within shouting distance of Oxford (or willing to be for purposes of talking about their work for/with 18th century scholars?)

This is awful for everyone. Also, mark my words: it’s going to lead to a speeding-up of degree times (and likely degradation of the quality of programs) at many institutions as they continue to admit non-US applicants and tacitly “promise” them that they can complete the program.

People should be able to tell the difference between "Good Books" and "Fun Reads". There are many books that are objectively NOT Good Books, but they're Fun Reads, and there are many books that are NOT Fun Reads, but are very Good Books They're not mutually exclusive, but they're different criteria

THE POPE IS QUOTING GANDALF!!!
213. The twentieth-century Catholic author J.R.R. Tolkien, in the words of a protagonist in one of his novels, described our responsibility in this way: “It is not our part to master all the tides of the world, but to do what is in us for the succour of those years wherein we are set, uprooting the evil in the fields that we know, so that those who live after may have clean earth to till.”

Light. Fire. Electricity. Mary Shelley is pretty obvious about Victor's obsessions and the Creature's animation. The discourse is exhausting. Especially if it's contained under a comment arguing that Shelley didn't write the novel. I remember a listserv imploding because of this argument.

A more challenging question is whether it is ethical or socially desirable to screen individuals based on facial features within a given demographic group.

I’m really starting to suspect that most of the tech bros haven’t actually read Tolkien, as they certainly don’t understand it. The gentle hobbits save the “hard men” of Gondor, largely through compassion and selflessness. Not the other way around. The Christian parable is barely hidden!
