Garvey, Young and Lupino standing side by side in a rocky desert landscape. The men are wearing long overcoats and wide-brimmed hats, hands in packets. Lupino is wearing a baseball-style overcoat with a large stylized ‘B’ logo. Her coat is open and her hands on hips.

Bosley Crowther of The New York Times said, "Born to Kill" (1947) is "a smeary tabloid fable" and "an hour and a half of ostentatious vice." Bosley just didn't get it. Lawrence Tierney's Sam Wilde remains one of noir's most frightening monsters. And it's all pure noir. #filmnoir

"All you need to make a movie is a girl and a gun." Maybe Jean-Luc Godard wasn't the first to utter that maxim, but he took it to heart in shooting "Breathless" (1960). Its nervous, choppy editing, wry comments on post-war France, and on film itself, make it a landmark. #filmnoir

White linen suits, ceiling fans, smoky cantinas: "The Bribe" (1949) has it all. MGM's backlot stands in for a Central American fishing village, where histrionic villains Charles Laughton and Vincent Price add pizzazz to this agreeably woozy melodrama told in flashback. #filmnoir
