Is Lincoln (2012) one of the most underrated historical political dramas in film history, or a West Wing-esque hagiography of a US President? We got @jeevunsandher.bsky.social in to talk all things Abe, the 13th Amendment, war, political speeches and the cost of being in politics. Links below 👇

In my view it’s that political journalists sometimes confuse the importance of simple language with the need for simple arguments.

Harsh words, but a lot of truth in this, especially around second-guessing oneself and thinking that dumbing an argument down makes it more accessible. How could anyone less smart than us (gasp) understand the full nuance and complexity of politics?!

Not the first to make this point. But there is a tyrant in charge of another country who is accused of being heavily linked to a paedophile sex ring - and supposed ‘patriots’ in this country are passionately willing him to take down our national broadcaster. Madness.

Given that no complaints were received at time of broadcast, Gibb is at least as responsible for the current mess, with the BBC threatened with legal action by a foreign head of government, as those who made the programme. How on earth can he stay in post?

Honestly this is such an utterly infuriating and conspiratorial delusion that is only getting worse after a decade. Yes, Russia likes to play on divides. Yes, people will accept money from Russia in corrupt ways. But no, that doesn’t mean all of our problems are a Russian plot.

Politics is not like selling biscuits, where the task is to find out what people like & flog it to them. It's a moral activity. It's about arguing for the things you believe in. It's about *shaping* the "median voter". Farage has moved the centre-ground of politics. His opponents can move it back.

We’re heartbroken to learn that Dr Jane Goodall has passed away, aged 91. Dr Goodall was one of the true conservation giants of our time. Let’s honour her legacy by choosing to make a difference in the world - by protecting it. Thank you, Jane, for everything you did for our planet. 💚

There are very few decent reasons for running an MRP 4+ years out from the next likely general election, but one of them is “well, it’ll help fill a newspaper between Christmas and NYE”. It’s filler! I wouldn’t read much into it beyond that.
