When you're enjoying the big perennial border at Beacon Hill Park, suddenly get the feeling you're not alone, and turn around. #canadageese #beaconhillpark #salishsea #birdwatching
A Canada Goose stands, bill fully extended to chest height on me, eyes a-bulge and appearing mostly snout due to the foregrounding of the bill in the camera's field of vue. It is clearly expecting food, willingly or unwillingly provided. There is definitely a Jurassic Park velociraptor vibe, the sense that while I'm locking gazes with this one, the other ones are picking my pocket and then waddling off to get french fries and ice cream from the nearby seaside diner.

I've heard that the "pudding" in black/blood pudding derives from "boudin", a French word for sausage. It sounds a bit like pudding, I suppose, and I can see it getting mangled into that by non French speakers.

Reminds me of how confused I got reading a fantasy book, where the wizard protagonist described his enemy as having his hands covered in something that "looked like black pudding". Took me a few minutes to realise he meant that custardy stuff that Americans call pudding and not blood sausage....

There are certainly people who call if afters though. It may be partly regional too - I mean, you can walk half a mile down the street in this country and that changes what they call a bread roll 🙃

Not fighting, just providing a contradictory data point. There are indeed people who call it afters, but I don't think it's quite as clear-cut as rich/working class. I suspect regional differences are also involved.

My family is not rich. We've always called it pudding.

I never realised The Littlest Hobo was a German Shepherd as he doesn't look like the ones I'm familiar with. I wonder if he was an atypical individual, or if the breed has different characteristics in Canada🤔

BlueSky is trying to monetize so let's show them some numbers: Reskeet this if you refuse to pay for BlueSky+ until trust & safety decides to prioritize marginalized users. That's $96 / year of lost revenue for each reskeet...

There's a lot about the Cass Review that is unethical, one thing it got right though is the collation of evidence from patients records that showed very clearly that: 1. There is NO evidence that patients have been harmed by puberty blockers 2. Detransition rates are consistantly and EXTREMELY low

Every museum should have a Little Guys Tour, and at the end of the tour you can buy reproductions of all the little guys
Egyptian Blue Bes ceramic Statue from the British museum shop, kind of looks like a tiny suspicious bear? He's adorable A middle Egyptian turquoise hippo from the met. He looks despondent and adorable. He has line art of reeds painted on his back and face. A ceramic baby rattle from the met shaped like a pig. However it doesn't look much like a pig, it's giving creature saying ooooooo. It's adorable.Little red earthenware bowl from the met. It has two little humanoid feet on the bottom and looks like he's standing shyly. Adorable.

Pushmi-pull-emu 😂 (Twycross Zoo, June 2014)
Two emus (large fluffy flightless birds) are standing one facing left, the other right, and the body of the left facing one obscures the body of the other, so that they look like one large four-legged animal with a head and long neck at each end, like the Pushmi-pullyu from the Doctor Dolittle stories by Hugh Lofting.

I don't know how you feel about ebooks, but most of them let you change the font, and some have a supposedly dyslexic - friendly font (although it probably doesn't suit every dyslexic person). Anyway, I hope she enjoys the book, in whatever form.

Razorbill. Taken on Lunga in the Treshnish isles, several years ago.
Headshot of a Razorbill, from the side. The head is mostly black, with a horizontal white line running from the top of the small parrot-like bill to the small brown eye (with a tiny pinprick black pupil). The bill is also mainly black, but shiny and with a vertical white line across the height of it, which curves toward the head at the top end.

The bird's white chest can be seen just below the head, meeting the black area diagonally.

A remarkable experience here at my house yesterday. I saw something moving in a tree outside my office window and I thought it was a squirrel at first. It wasn't. It was a very wet, very hungry Northern Olingo: a nocturnal creature that is incredibly difficult to see and not common 1/3 #mammals 🌿
A curious, wide-eyed creature peers through the lush jungle foliage, its wet fur glistening from a recent rain. Its large, round eyes, deep and expressive, reflect a quiet wonder and alertness. Tiny droplets cling to its delicate whiskers and damp nose, adding to the sense of immediacy in this intimate encounter. Small, clawed hands grip a branch tightly, showcasing its dexterity and arboreal agility. Surrounding it, vibrant green leaves and moss-covered branches frame the scene, highlighting its presence in the dense rainforest. A moment of raw, untamed beauty in the heart of the wild.

Wow! Brilliant picture! I went and looked this animal up, as I'd not heard of the species before. I thought it looked quite like a bushbaby, so I was surprised to learn they're members of the same family as raccoons! What an exciting thing to find in your garden!
