NICU babies are the most vulnerable a human can be, and it seems almost quaint to say it now, but we are supposed to build societies where the most vulnerable can count on others to not let this happen

Oh boy, if you thought I had a bee in my bonnet about dangerous car drivers (and bad scooter/ebike riders with a death wish) on DC streets before? A new level of righteous anger was unlocked by trying to navigate RI Ave NE rush hour with our newborn in the car.

It's telling that some of the beliefs you can develop from an interest in making a city better for the people who live in it, like "mistakes should be survivable" and "children who make an impulsive choice around a street should not die or get hurt for it," are categorized as very socially radical.

The new candidate in another SMD in my ANC whom I guessed was running out of anger about a handful of parking spots being removed for intersection daylighting and improving a bike lane did basically go ahead & admit that to GGWash. They provide such a public service! ggwash.org/view/104557/...

This is also just about 1.5 miles daily--doable because the Dutch prioritize homes being located close places that people need to go. We could have this in the US in about a decade just by removing the myriad laws prohibiting good land use. Our cities suck because it's illegal for them not to.

So glad I got to visit Dollywood, including seeing the Dolly revue show and the "Life of Many Colors" museum, earlier this year while she was still with us. Some fave pics I took:
A glass box display of Dolly's past wigs of varying eras and styles A museum display of one of Dolly's dresses, yellow with leopard print accents and a large rhinestone leopard on the skirt, with a sign that notes it is from a 1976 episode of the Dolly variety showA display in the Dolly museum with a video of her singing projected on a large guitar on the wall under the words "Dolly"

year 1: there's still grant funding, but we may need to change how we talk about our work, or what we work on year 2: the government has disappeared one billion dollars of science funding. it is unclear why they did that or where that sits within concepts like "the rule of law"

I don't know how effective a viewer boycott of the show could be--I guess we'll see--but I do think a media boycott would have some impact. If all the websites that would ordinarily cover this from every angle just greet it with oceans of silence...maybe it'd mean something.

They've been out here pushing this crap... I know someone who had an unexplained stillbirth a few years ago and some quack doctor suggested to her with no evidence that her COVID vaxes in previous years could have been a factor. In her vulnerable state, she took it seriously. Screw these people.

Not sure if there's been less discussion of it or if I've just missed it, but with two more pedestrian deaths in the last week of July, DC's count of traffic fatalities has already surpassed last year's total, and is on pace to beat every prior year of the Bowser admin. _except_ 2023-4.
Bar chart of DC traffic fatalities by year since 1995.
After rising to their highest level since 2007 in 2023, and matching it in 2024, fatalities dropped to a 14-year low in 2025.
However, traffic fatalities are already higher in 2026 than all of 2025, and are on pace to be the third-highest in 20 years, 45, behind only 2023 and 2024.

Even the worst-transit-served block in DC has better transit and lower VMT than this corner of Loudoun County. Following the logic of TOD, DC should allow this RF-1-style density everywhere. Yet it doesn't - because it's applying TOD logic to exclude, not include.

I have to hope that under a new administration and different Council, DC won't keep raiding paid family & medical leave funds and cutting benefit maximums to pay for general fund things that should be covered by more progressive taxation on DC's wealthiest. dc.citycast.fm/news/dc-paid...
Bar chart from linked City Cast DC article noting that "Most money raised by paid leave tax doesn't go to paid leave." Showing how at first, all money from the paid leave payroll tax went to the PFML fund, but since 2025 a majority has been redirected to the general fund.

DC employers (and by extension employees) are now paying the same payroll tax to receive less benefits since the benefit maximums are being reduced in the FY27 budget.

Well I have received this truly twisted Instagram ad from Matt Walsh and the Daily Wire.
Screenshot of Instagram ad with photo of child screaming with hands over their ears and a mom in the background whom I guess I'm meant to take it is a bad mom because the text says "How Gentle Parenting Helped Turn America Against Children: Men have a deep need for respect. The culture spent decades telling women that is not their problem. The marriages paid the price."
