Among our new October books is @sarahbrouillette.bsky.social's "Content Machines," which considers how platforms like Wattpad and TikTok have reshaped modern publishing, reading, and writing: buff.ly/bWWE29D
Cover of Content Machines: Reading and Writing in the Platform Era by Sarah Brouillette. The cover is white with a tablet featuring six colorful digitally drawn images of romance book covers. There are blue thumbs ups and red hearts covering the images. Beneath is written, “Reading and Writing in the Platform Era” in bold. Below this, in lighter text, a summary of Content Machines begins. The title is written vertically in the bottom right parallel to the tablet. The author’s name is directly after in a smaller serif font.

What I received from the #DH2026 keynote today is that the humanities should resist turning from: L - P - L' (or P - L - P' in the ideal world I suppose) To: L - L' (L = Learning; P = Practice) Because if all we do is the latter, we will be screwed in the age of AI.

Very happy to introduce a new tool, BookReconciler! You can take spreadsheets with book data and add subject headings, descriptions, ISBNs, HathiTrust IDs, & more. You can also cluster editions & variations of the same "Work." Led by @thisismattmiller.com and supported by @post45data.bsky.social.
Diagram illustrating the BookReconciler workflow. On the left, a book cover of The Book of Salt by Monique Truong appears alongside “Minimal Metadata,” listing Author: Truong, Monique and Title: The Book of Salt. An arrow points to a box labeled “BookReconciler” with book and diamond icons. A downward arrow leads to “Enriched + Clustered Metadata,” showing multiple editions of the book cover and expanded metadata, including several ISBNs, subject headings (e.g., Vietnamese–France fiction, women authors, household employees, gay men, cooking), and an author VIAF identifier.

University of Colorado - Boulder - Assistant or Associate Professor of History | H-Net
The Department of History at the University of Colorado Boulder seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor or early Associate Professor specializing in Native American history with a focus on the North American West, broadly defined. The successful applicant will have access to funds associated with the Walter and Lucienne Driskill Professorship in Western American History. Specialization is open, but the department particularly encourages applications from scholars whose research focuses on the early American West (pre-1920s) and engages with legal history, the history of women and gender, environmental history, and/or the history of medicine and public health.  Scholars with demonstrated commitments to engaging Native American communities and/or supporting Native and Indigenous students are especially encouraged to apply, as are those who bring relevant lived and individual experiences and achievements to this position.

Unsurprising: Using longer words makes female authors more “literary” Surprising: The opposite is true for male authors For more cool plots + findings, take a look at my #CHR2025 paper exploring the role of form vs gender in the classification of genre & literary fiction doi.org/10.63744/Ztw...
Plot illustrating how a book's probability of being classified as literary fiction varies with average word length and author gender. For female authors, longer words are correlated with an increased likelihood of literary classification. For male authors, the inverse is true.
