I don’t think everyone realizes how bad things are for US science: For the fiscal year that just ended, the Trump regime withheld $1.4 billion from the National Science Foundation’s research budget, which is about 1/5 of its primary research budget.

Betsy's right, though. I do wonder if the reason tutoring stands out as particularly effective is because it's so often a *targeted* intervention, which raises questions about differences in effect sizes for universal vs targeted programs.

Perfect timing! High-quality curriculum is in the "more effective, lower cost" quadrant. I suspect that effectively implementing curriculum is higher cost than we think. E.g. coaching could be helpful, and that shows up in the "more effective, higher cost" quadrant. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/28/u...

I think it was @covingtonedu.bsky.social who said the fundamental professionalism of teacher practice is aligning curriculum and pedagogy to student needs. One thing I'm thinking about is the inherent tension between improving consistency in quality of instruction and differentiation to meet needs.
