Computational (socio)linguist interested in how we co-negotiate meaning during conversation. Because I’ve been working with transformers since 2018, very not into AI hype. zaqari.github.io (He/they)

Listen, these things can’t go “rogue”. It’s just a basic LLM stuck in a while loop. But this kind of attack is possible by doing something as simple as that, and that means that more people can set up programs to do terrible things like this moving forward on a whim.

Modern language modeling has devolved into big companies competing for who can do the campiest spin-off of 1980s sci-fi movies. I genuinely miss the old days where folks were more interested in building models for their specific tasks.

This is a fantastic point. I've talked to some folks about this recently and I described it as "just manipulating the posterior distribution on tokens to be more constrained... regardless of whether it generates a useful response or not." This is a much better way to explain this, though.

I have a plan that would work. Every time someone makes a sweeping prediction with the term AI in it, if that prediction doesn’t pan out you can sue them. Cut it off at the hype.

We released our new Executive Paywatch report, and surprise surprise, corporate greed is out of control. Last year, S&P 500 CEOs gave themselves a 21% raise and now make 312x what median workers do. Meanwhile, workers are struggling to make ends meet.

The point of conversation isn’t to end up on the same page as your partner but to be just uncoupled/different enough to work together to come up with new sh*t to talk about while feeling good about it. In other words: go be you, fam.

New preprint live while the paper is in review! The way speakers and their partners (1) generate new info relative to prior convo states and (2) appear to coordinate how much new information each person/partner generates is functionally capable of "universal" computation (i.e. EXTENDED cognition)

I'm not going to lie. If given my druthers, I would be setting up every company I can with an open-weight model, giving them the tools to fit the model to their own data using LoRA, and doing everything I can to forge the scrappy, punk rock, solar-punk vision of computation I was promised as a kid.

Dear #REI: Wtf are you even thinking? You HAVE to know that the environmental impacts of corporate AI are horrendous. & that using it on a whim like this means supporting environmental degradation. How is this consistent with the brand's values??? Sincerely, A livid co-op member.
An invitation to participate in a survey from REI where the methods include: "The research session will be conducted on an AI-driven platform called Listen Labs, which uses an AI moderator. You will be presented with text prompts, and you will respond with your thoughts through video and audio. The research session also requires you use your computer or laptop (your mobile device will not work)."

From @hcrichardson.bsky.social's newsletter today. So should we expect that the new ballroom goes from white to green pretty much as soon as they open it?
Yesterday Sarah Blaskey and Jonathan O’Connell of the Washington Post reported that last summer, White House officials awarded a no-bid contract for $500 million for the construction of a ballroom where the East Wing of the White House used to be. In turn, the company that got the contract, Clark Construction, told the White House it would award no-bid contracts to at least eleven subcontractors for services including demolition, fencing, excavation, and so on.

I'm not going to say that complex systems science (CSS) holds the answer, but goddamnit it's got a really good framework that we can use to look for a mechanism of distributed cognition. There are a few things from CSS that I want us to grab and hold onto here.

I'm trying to find a home for a paper that I'm pretty proud of (it's a large-scale analysis of how people work together to generate new information during conversation). But one thing that absolutely sucks is while looking , nearly every journal I think would be a good fit has an exorbitant APC fee.

something that brings me profound sadness is watching technology's promise of making knowledge accessible and affordable be bastardized into a promise of class exploitation and 24/7 surveillance. we have a chance to change this. it starts, not with an app, but by meeting people where they're at.

This has literally been a part of deep reinforcement learning algorithms since at least 2016/2018ish, and maybe earlier. These folks (OpenAI/Anthropic) are BAD researchers in part because they have no idea what’s actually going on in their own field outside of LLMs.

What I wish for everybody to remember when Canvas comes back online: The reason OUR data can be held for ransom is because Instructure, their owners (KKR private equity & Dragoneer venture capital), & our own employers (see ASU Atomic) monetize it. It's Canvas that hacked education & stole our IP.

Honestly, macOS is built on Unix. And Unix is basically just Linux. As someone who uses both, I actually like my Linux computer more. And the same logic I use to navigate my macOS files and interface apply to my Ubuntu kernel. TLDR; they’re basically the same.

What kills me about this too is that under no circumstances would I call this “AI education”. Teach them the math and objective function AIs are trained on. If they can do algebra 1, they can understand it. All this is is “training” new consumers for companies like OAI and anthropic.
