Poor Tom Tugendhat. He looks like he's aged a decade over the last 9 years.

Going to piss off everyone I do not believe any ethnostate of any kind should exist. AND Much of the driving motivation behind this specific motion is in fact rooted in antisemitism. Lots of the people involved here are not acting in good faith. The horrible situation will be damaging to Greens.

Be under no illusion: this is a significant victory for everyone who stuck their neck out and defended jury trials, day after day, clause by clause. But it is not a comprehensive victory. Magistrates should not be allowed to send people to prison for two years.

They'll try to 'reform' the magistrates' court by having each case heard by a single lay magistrate in a Premier Inn.

I believe fraternity hazing and military hazing and sports team hazing where men abuse each other is acclimating them into a broader culture of abuse where they will then believe it is their right to abuse other more vulnerable people. It’s so insidious. And that’s also why I think men defend it

This is attempted murder and we should run the clock on how long it will take to bring those charges. We should also start pressing for the use of the terrorism act since, you know, it’s otherwise used. Keep in mind those actions were both announced and coordinated, as well as externally financed.

This is vile. Anyone who can stomach this judgement is disgusting and cannot be trusted. The courts need to stop deciding cases without a factual matrix which will destroy the lives of real people. We're only beginning to see the impact of FWS.

Here's a thread of all the reasons why this ban will not work: 1) It will not stop kids from using social media. It will be circumvented (as we've seen with the age verification rules) with VPNs. My favourite circumvention there was someone using Garry's Mod to get around the ban.

It's at times like this when I miss Thomas Bingham. This obiter from R (Jackson) [2005] UKHL 56 is really the only legal defence we have to a Parliamentary dictatorship.
In exceptional circumstances involving an attempt to abolish judicial review or the ordinary role of the courts, the Appellate Committee of the House of Lords or a new Supreme Court may have to consider whether this is a constitutional fundamental which even a sovereign Parliament acting at the behest of a complaisant House of Commons cannot abolish.

Thank you for picking up on this. It's not a political priority, but as a mental capacity solicitor I know that so many people are going to be trapped against their will with no oversight or legal protection. The government needs to bring in LPS as soon as possible and ensure it fills in those gaps.

This ruling is completely out of touch with reality. As a solicitor who represents people deprived of their liberty w/out capacity, care providers have no incentive to report when DoL is taking place, and the number of times I have seen a client's objections be willfully misinterpreted is shocking.

A lot of our discourse seems to assume that 1) these wrong beliefs somehow arise naturally and 2) politicians have a duty to behave as if these wrong beliefs are true. It saves asking questions about old and new media, or doing anything brave, but it’s rotting our society and economy.

Frustrated with the election pundits talking as if votes only 'swing' from one party to another. I did some analysis of the results, and my modelling (based on votes only, not polls) suggests that the largest movement since 2024 local elections (by a long way) is from 'Did Not Vote' -> Reform
A Sankey diagram, titled "Voter flows, UK local elections 2024 to 2026"

The conclusion "Reform won the seat from Lab therefore biggest vote swing is Lab to Reform" does not follow from this pattern. There are multiple vote flows here: Lab to Grn, Lab to abstain, Lab to Ref, Con to Ref, abstain to Ref...Lab to Ref is only one part of this, not typically the largest

Important data point here: “A sharp fall in Labour's performance is accompanied more often by an above average Green performance than it is by a strong Reform performance”. The Greens have already hurt Labour even before any direct gains.

I think this is a slightly bad faith interpretation. Should the Greens have specified each section of every law they would repeal? Manifestos rarely have that level of specificity.

An often overlooked point. Less politically engaged voters tend to have much more elastic political views/allegiances. A big part of the reason Reform is doing so well currently is they focused on one issue (immigration) and controlled the narrative around it. Most Reform voters aren't die-hards.

Many powers exist for protest conditions (location, timing) and for policing unlawful conduct on them (intimidation, harassment, proscribed orgs) - A high threshold to ban a specific event re public order - Almost certainly a disproportionate restriction on speech rights to ban any specific theme

Turnout. Who actually votes and what motivates them to do so. It's often the deciding factor in who wins.
