New one today for @defector.com: in the wake of the most recent declaration of reading's demise, I was curious what booksellers, almost always ignored by the post-literate prognosticators, made of such claims. Here's what they told me:

What Do Booksellers Make Of “The End Of Reading”? | Defector
If you haven’t yet encountered the cover story for the August issue of The Atlantic, I have some bad news to share: “The End of Reading Is Here.” It’s an intentionally provocative headline for a sligh...

a large language model will never stumble upon an appreciation of alliteration or the appeal of assonance simply to delight itself, and these are the sort of things that connect the reader and the author invisibly. i dunno, it all just makes me sad

Neither here nor there, but to me, one of the main "tells" of LLM-generated writing, regardless of how sophisticated it is, is that a machine isn't able to consistently approach musicality because the text isn't a secondhand offshoot of verbal communication for it in the way it is for a person.

Wow: Texas Children's Hospital in Houston, one of the biggest children's hospitals in the nation, will be forced to create the nation's first ever "detransition clinic" as part of a $10 million settlement with Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
Attorney General Ken Paxton secured a historic settlement with Texas Children’s Hospital (“Texas Children’s”) that compels the creation of the country’s first-ever Detransition Clinic; requires the hospital to pay $10 million for billing Texas Medicaid for unallowable and illegal ‘gender-transition’ interventions, including by using false diagnosis codes; and compels the termination and revocation of privileges of multiple physicians.

After a years-long investigation by the Healthcare Program Enforcement Division, Attorney General Paxton has negotiated a historic settlement that will help protect Texans. Under the terms of this landmark agreement, Texas Children’s will establish the first-ever multidisciplinary clinic designed to provide medical care to patients who were subjected to “gender-transition” procedures. This Detransition Clinic will help patients reverse the damage caused by ideologically-motivated physicians who harmed patients by performing dangerous medical interventions for the purpose of “transitioning” them. For the first five years, all services provided through the Detransition Clinic will be funded by Texas Children’s and be free of charge to patients.

🚨 #houndsky siren 🚨 Hi y'all, I posted a couple days ago about this sweet coonhound needing to be sprung from an overcrowded Alabama shelter. We had an ABTCR foster lined up for him here in Georgia, but they've had a family emergency and are unable to take him in. Anybody feel like saving a life?
A red and white speckled American English Coonhound with his tongue lolling out🚨 ABTCR FOSTER NEEDED 🚨
ABTCR is urgently looking for a foster for a 7-month-old male American English Coonhound who deserves so much better than what he’s been given. 💔
This adorable boy was surrendered to an Alabama shelter simply because “he won’t bark or hunt.” Yes… really. Instead of being valued for his gentle nature, he was abandoned for being too quiet and sweet.
Despite everything, he is:
🐶 Great with other dogs
❤️ Loves people
🐱Tested with cats at the shelter—nervous and showed no interest
The shelter is over capacity, and we want to pull him to safety—but we cannot do it without a foster.
🏡 Fostering saves lives. ABTCR covers all expenses for foster dogs—you just provide a safe, loving place for him to land.
This boy didn’t fail anyone—he was failed. Let’s show him what love is supposed to look like. ❤️

All of our personal data is increasingly tracked & surveilled. A new book (“Your Data Will Be Used Against You”) breaks it down. We asked its author, @profferguson.bsky.social, if he'd answer your questions on the risks & what it means for politics & liberties. He agreed. So ask him anything!
It’s a topic we thought Bolts readers may have a lot of questions about, so we turned to Andrew Guthrie Ferguson, a law professor and author of the new book “Your Data Will Be Used Against You.” Ferguson researched how modern policing is tracking personal data, and how digital surveillance technology can be weaponized to threaten personal freedoms.

“You are, at best, a warrant away from having your most intimate personal details revealed to a government agent looking to incarcerate, embarrass, or intimidate you,” he writes in his book.

Ferguson has agreed to answer questions from Bolts readers—so now we want to hear from you.
