As we welcome the more relaxed days of summer, all that unstructured time creates new worry for parents. Will the kids expect to log a lot more hours playing Minecraft or going down a TikTok rabbit hole? And will the household turn into a war zone over screen time?

The more we know about what helps — and harms — LGBTQ+ youth, the better we can support them. We must look at both the risk factors — things that increase the likelihood that an LGBTQ+ kid will develop serious mental health problems — and the protective factors, or things that reduce that risk.

Managing big feelings doesn’t mean suppressing them. You can help kids ground themselves in the present moment by using their five senses. Putting together a self-soothe kit with one item per sense can help kids calm down in a moment where thinking clearly feels impossible.

We can’t protect kids from stress, but we can make sure they know how to move through it. And the earlier kids learn how, the better their stress-management tools can become. Paced belly breathing is a simple, useful tool we can teach kids to help calm the nervous system and clear the mind.
