Found a painting of Timothee Chalmet in his first role as David from <checks notes> 1616.
A gilt picture from of an oil painting. It’s dark and broody and in the front middle is the head of Goliath. Hover over Goliath like a pale young saviour is Timothee Chalamet. You can be sure is Chalamet because his front shoulder is bar and dropped and stares off past your eye line, tortured. The label of the paining. It’s by Valentine de Boulogne who lived and worked in Europe from 1599- 1632 which is incredible because he managed to cross paths with Timothee Chalamet while there.

Quite emotional to report that we've just found our amazing survivor Marsh Tit, still here in his ancient woodland kingdom. He's now 11 yrs 4 months old, survived the 2026 heatwaves/drought and smelt the wildfires of nearby Holme Fen. I ringed him in my 30s and I'm now in my 50s.

I realised that starting a new book gives me the same rush that online dating used to. Will this one be any good for me? Will it make me laugh? Can I take it to bed with me? Does it fit in my handbag? Etc.

London musical theatre PSA: the excellent production of Into the Woods at The Bridge Theatre is moving to the West End. Moves at a clip and serves up the comedy and darkness in delightful, delicious dollops.
A poster advertising the musical Into the Woods. The poster is landscape sized and overwhelmingly black. On the right edge a red cloaked, curly haired girl in (slightly) garish makeup looks back over her shoulder in excitement or fright. In the middle of the canvas the words ‘into the woods’ are written in bold capital letters. Beneath them, small enough to be the last line in an eye test, it says ‘and happy ever after’.

Seems weird the whole "are you ready for war if it happens" thing the government is pushing when clearly we've been at war via misinformation, funding far right hate groups, attacking British institutions and so forth for ages. A better question is "when is the government going to do something?"

Dreamt I was in an Edinburgh pub and JK Rowling entered, beaded her eyes around, and stomped to the loos. ‘Oh no, trouble’ I thought and went to intervene. I opened the door to no JKR but a literal shit-hole: a row of door-less toilets flushing into open drains. ‘This is what she wanted’ I nodded.

Just finished Jo Harkin’s The Pretender. Might grab my spot for favourite book of the yr. It’s the holy trinity: enjoyable writing, story with pace, and so funny that the poignant bits then level you. I read the final chapters w Ralph Vaughan Williams on in the background which was v clever of me.
The book cover of Jo Harkin’s The Pretender. A mostly black cover with thin, Tudor-esque font and a pair of pale hands creeping out from the darkness to hold a red rose.

Cat(s) Amongst the Pigeons, RA Summer Exhibition.
A photo of an art gallery with various small paintings on the walls. On the left hand wall is a prominent picture of a pigeon, shuffling off stage left with big clodding feet. On the right hand wall, high up on a circular canvas painted yellow, sits another pigeon, staring off to the right. In the middle is a step ladder holding a stuffed cat, beadily looking into the middle distance. A sneaky canvas by the cats head features another cat, super hero dressed and with beaming white eyes. I think I’m the only one in the gallery who found this tableau amusing.

Picked this up on a whim and quietly loved it. It’s slim (an afternoon’s read for anyone doing couch to 5k), but w an emotional heft. What’s the point of art, Isherwood asks, when the world is on fire? And how do we keep creating that art when we see and feel the flames?

In my head, I know a week isn’t long enough to sample all the cheeses. But in my heart.
A row of cheeses in an Italian hypermarket. The row is long, multi-faceted and, unsurprisingly, full of cheese. The cheese kiosk is four-sided and open in the middle. Like a cheese Santa, a cheesemonger dressed in white walks about in the middle, delivering more cheese. Reader, I want them all.
